(( Zachariah Johnston continued from This Is Why We Fight ))

Zach was, for the first time in a while, reading. It was strangely comforting to be sitting on a rock, thumbing through a paperback again. The book in question was the manual for the pistol that Jake had been issued. A SIG Sauer P226 Blackwater Tactical, to be exact. It fired the 9x19mm Parabellum round from a Double Action trigger system, and held 20 of the rounds in a magazine.

This didn't really matter to him though. What did matter, was the bit at the back that detailed proper firing of it. Pistols tended to be the most common (useful) arms, and refreshing his memory on how to fire them was bound to come in handy at some point.

It also dulled the irritation at being forced to wait for another few minutes, which could be vital. He was silently willing him to hurry the hell up, as staying in one place for too long whilst supposedly on the move was bound to end badly, as it would give anyone following them a chance to catch up. Which would probably not end well.

He sighed and looked around. They were near the edge of the Rainforest, which made him a little more paranoid, as he expected to hear that beeping at any moment. The fact that they were bordered on the other side by thick bushes didn't help either.

"Hurry uuuupp" He muttered under his breath. He wanted to go. He wanted to be out of here 5 minuites ago. He wanted be with Mae and the rest of the group. He wanted to be sure that they were ok. He had a really bad feeling that they weren't. Something just seemed off, didn't feel right. And that just made him even more tense, which made him feel like something even worse was going to happen. Every second he wasn't doing something about it just made it worse.

He looked back down at the book.

"Gun Safety; GUNS ARE NOT TOYS, NEVER POINT THEM AT OTHER PEOPLE"

That elicted a little laugh. Seemed the producers had a sense of humour after all.

[Save Yourself, Serve Yourself --> Eloise Winterburn]

She didn't know quite how it had happened, really. Back home, Eloise had always had a pretty good sense of direction, after all, but perhaps expecting the ability to navigate the streets of Detroit to translate well to traversing an unfamiliar, mostly undeveloped island was a little too much to hope for. So, as it stood, Eloise was, without a doubt, quite lost. At the very least, she knew she'd managed to travel a good distance north before getting split up from the Team Bread heh heh terrible portmanteau, so the rolling plains she now stood on were presumably somewhere between the rainforest, the regular forest, and the tar pits.

Still, having a vague idea of where she was wasn't the same as actually knowing. And when you don't have a decent You Are Here to compare to, having a map and compass isn't much help. So Eloise decided to do the sensible thing, find a decent landmark, then navigate from there. The so-called "Hot Spot", not terribly deep into the rainforest, seemed as good as any, being a very definite place on the map, but small enough to be pretty exact. It stood to reason the wooded area around it wouldn't constitute a danger zone, if the hot spot itself hadn't been declared one.

So that's what the girl did. She aligned herself to the east, stowed her map and compass back into her bag, stared at her joke costume for a few seconds Considering the hammer, that could actually be pretty cool, in a retro comic books kind of way...

No, no, focusing on the task at hand. Getting the backpack back on and heading towards a useful grid reference came first, dressing up as Harley Quinn could wait until later, at least until she had somewhere secluded to get changed.

Soon, the edge of the rainforest came into view. It stretched off as far as Eloise could see both to the north and south, so she kept her distance, quite sure she was nowhere near that hot spot just yet, and not wanting to get her head blown up for stupidly getting too close. But, just as she was pausing to make a guess at how far south her destination might be, Eloise saw something out of place.

No, someone, in fact. A person, sitting there by the treeline... reading a book. He looked bored, a little antsy, like he was only there reading in the first place because he was waiting for someone, or for something to happen. That gave the girl pause for thought, it could be some kind of trap. But such thoughts were disregarded when she recognised the boy in question. It had been dark at the time, and she'd scarcely seen him, but it was hard not to memorise a person's appearance when they were covered in blood and hurling wrenches around. She couldn't put a name to the face, of course, the boy was one of the Texan academy kids, but that didn't stop her identifying him as 'That crazy guy from last night'. So there was just one thing to do.

Eloise shrugged off her backpack, hefted her sledgehammer up onto her shoulder, and approached with a casual pace that belied her less-than-casual intentions; this boy was a threat to the survival of her and the people she'd become fairly fond of recently, that wasn't going to continue if she could help it.

The blonde girl was just a few feet away when she spoke, a similarly jarringly casual comment. "Howdy cowboy, remember me?"

And it was about that point that she swung for him, a clean horizontal sweep with the hammer. It was aimed for the head, but never having touched a sledgehammer before arriving on the island, Eloise misjudged the weapon's weight, giving it a considerably lower - though still admirably straight - arc.

Footsteps. Good, Jake was back. Took him long enough. He shut the book and looked up.

"Hi J-"

That wasn't Jake.

"Howdy cowboy, remember me?"

Who the fuck wa-

Before he could even process what was happening, the girl swung a hammer at him, missing him, just slightly. Shit, he felt the wind off that. He jumped up, his eyes wide and his muscles suddenly tense.

"Holy Fucking Shit!" He shouted as he moved forward. She looked off balance. The Sledgehammer probably weighed more than her whole body, his whole body. He punched her. He grabbed the rod that held the weapon together and yanked as hard as he could. If she swung again she wouldn't miss and then he'd be completely fucked. Those things were the fucking .50 cal rifles of the melee world. And she seemed like she knew how to fucking use it.

"Fuck!"

There wasn't really any other word for it, for as far as Eloise could see, the hammer's head seemed to have sailed ineffectually past Zachariah's chest, literally a matter of inches short of doing some horrendous damage. And now, quite predictably, the wielder was off balance, trying to correct for a mass that probably exceeded her own pulling her to the side.

"Holy Fucking Shit!"

Zach seemed to respond in much the same way, but without having a sledgehammer to deal with, he was much quicker on his feet. Just as Eloise managed to pull back and bring her weapon back up between herself and him, the boy's fist collided with her face, setting her back a few steps and knocking the ironic perspex-lensed glasses flying off of her face.

For her part, though, she had more important things to worry about than ineffectual eyewear. Things like Zach trying to disarm her whilst she was still recovering from the combination of her poorly executed opening, and the surprisingly painful blow to her face. But Eloise reacted quickly, remembering a technique employed in a similar, fictional situation. A kid trying to defend himself from a cake, or something equally stupid. The point was, the misattributed quote to the effect 'Victory will go to the one who knows how to yield.' After a few moments of struggle, to force Zach to put his all into trying to yank the hammer away from her, Eloise simply let go, letting the boy's own strength push him to the floor on her behalf.

As a matter of fact, that went better than expected. Tripping over his own feet, Zachariah fell back onto the rock he'd previously been sitting on. The fall looked worse than 'awkward', it looked pretty damn painful. Eloise didn't have time to sympathise, though, she needed to act before he got up and got to work on her with that sledgehammer she'd essentially handed over. So, taking the initiative, she closed the distance and, pretty much straddling the boy's waist to restrict any hammer-related movement, returned the favour with a punch of her own to his face.

"Shouldn't have fucked with me, kiddo."

Huh. Her knuckles hurt, and yet, that felt incredibly good. In hindsight, Eloise had never actually hit anyone before. She'd always preferred more elegant ways of dealing with people she had a problem with. Maybe she'd been in the wrong, because that impact of fist against cheekbone, that look of pain and fear in the boy's eyes as she brought her arm back for another strike... it was inexplicably enjoyable. So she did it again. And again.

Before Eloise knew it, she was in a world of her own, fending off attempts at counter-attacking with an almost nonchalant manner, ignoring the strikes that made it through to hit her, all the while smashing her fist into Zach's face with a mounting ache to her knuckles and increasingly heavy breathing that only seemed to make the whole experience more enjoyable. Yes, I could get used to this...

She managed to keep her grip on the weapon, her wiry arms apparently stronger than his wiry arms.

Fuck, he was being beaten by a girl. Not even one of those freaking 6ft hulking Football players, she was roughly the same size as him, maybe a little smaller. A girl was stronger than him. Fucking hell!

He yanked again, putting all of his body weight and strength into the tug.

There was a few moments where triumph was clear on his face as he succeeded in tearing it from her grasp, but it was then immediatly followed by shock as he fell backwards. He tried to steady himself, but his feet got tangled up together and he fell onto the floor, onto the rock where he had been sitting a few seconds ago. The sledgehammer pushed all the air out of his lungs as it fell ontop of him. The handle of his sword thing was digging into his ribs and everything was suddenly really painful. He raised his head slightly, trying to locat her, or some way to get up. Then, a fist slammed into his face and he whacked his head back onto the stone with a dull thud.

"Urrgh" He moaned as the second blow hit and shattered his glasses, the frame cracking and digging pieces of plastic into the bridge of his nose. Everything felt.. Fuzzy.

"Shouldn't have fucked with me, kiddo."

He'd fucked with her?... Had she known someone who he'd killed?... But... He'd only killed people from Silver Dragon. She definetly wasn't from his school, she was distinctive, he'd've recognised her... Wait, the group, with April, and Jeanette... Had she been part of it?...

Could be. Didn't matter. What mattered was getting her off him, getting away. Living. Surviving.

He tried to swing up a fist, but she batted it away like some petty nuisance and punched him in the face again.

It really fucking hurt.

He watched as she raised her arm, obviously savouring the fear in his eyes as he watched it slowly ascend. Shit.

Wait, he could still move. He could dodge it. No pain.

It descended and he snapped his neck and body as far away as it would go.

Eventually, the high from so thoroughly dominating her foe subsided, and Eloise formulated something of a plan. It was, however, to carry on as she was, keep pummelling the boy's face until he can't think clearly enough to fight back, then finish him off in whatever way presents itself and head back to Team Bread with the good news. That was the idea, as she made ready to land yet another punishing strike, aiming this time perhaps to break his nose - blood loss would only hurt his chances, after all.

But that was when something she should've expected happened. Ironic, really, that for entirely different reasons, Eloise wasn't thinking clearly either. Too busy enjoying the sensation of physically overpowering someone to realise he didn't have to fight back just to escape. Nope, jerking his head to the side at the last minute worked just as well, and try as she might to lessen the momentum behind her fist, Eloise couldn't stop it hitting stone. Hard.

She recoiled, waving her hand wildly from the sudden, much less pleasant, pain. And that was when Zach took hold of the sledgehammer's handle once again, that same weapon she'd already managed to forget about, and thrust it into her midriff, pushing her up and off of him.

Eloise landed badly, slipping over her own heels and sprawling spread-eagled in the dirt. She tried to get up almost immediately, only to fall straight back onto her back at the unexpected pain of two twisted ankles. And with a very angry, sledgehammer-wielding Zacharia getting back up, there was nothing she could do but crawl backwards frantically, trailing blood from her ruined right hand as she went, desperately trying to think of a way out of this. Her backpack? Maybe. There must be something of use in there. There had to be. Eloise couldn't let herself die here.

He smiled briefly as she broke her hand on the rock beneath him. But, it wasn't over yet, of course. He needed to get her off of him, or she'd just carry on with her other hand, which'd make this completely fucking pointless. He gripped the sledgehammer and slammed it into her stomach, the momentum pulling him up, and knocking her over. He grinned again, this time, more extactically. He'd fucking turned the tables on the bitch!

She was trying to crawl away, get back to the treeline or something. Had she broken her ankles? If he had, that was fucking awesome. She was disabled now, fucked beyond belief.

He dropped the hammer on her feet, using it's weight to trap her for a second as he moved up and grabbed her long, blonde hair with one hand, pulling it to keep her head straight and taught as he slammed a fist into her face as hard as he could.

"How the fuck do you like it, huh?"

Things weren't exactly going well, to be perfectly honest, even before the full weight of her own weapon dropped onto Eloise's right foot. She was in a bad enough state as it was, but if her ankle wasn't broken beforehand, it certainly was afterwards. And boy, did she scream. She'd had her fair share of injuries thanks to her efforts on both the track and the court, but absolutely nothing could compare to the appalling, mind-bending pain that was having her foot twisted much further back than it was ever intended to go, tearing the joints of her ankle far beyond repair.

Eloise hadn't been certain it was over until then. There wasn't a doubt in her mind any more. Even if she somehow brought this back, she'd never walk on that foot again, and making it off the island to have it properly treated before some kind of horrific infection set in wasn't exactly likely.

By comparison, having her head yanked up by the hair barely registered as a thing that hurt. Just something that was happening, that she should be aware of. The girl's eyes fluttered open just in time to see Zach's fist flying towards them, and the impact had them closed in quite short order.

"How the fuck do you like it, huh?"

Eloise could scarcely process the question, and when it eventually sunk in, she knew there was no adequate answer, even if it wasn't rhetorical. From the perspective of both parties, the other had started this, so as far as Zachariah was concerned, Eloise deserved this. So instead of offer a verbal reply, the only thing she could do was respond in kind, with a decidedly feeble left-handed swing for the boy's groin. She was in too much pain to truly put all her strength behind it, but she could at least hope to slow him down, cling onto a few more seconds.

She seemed to barely react to the punch, being to busy whimpering and screaming already, from the hideous damadge he'd inflicted on her lower body. That didn't matter, the sight of blood trickling down her face was cathartic enough. It made him feel like the pain was worth it, replacing the straight pain with adrenaline.

Then from nowhere, a hand connected with his groin.

"AAAaargh" He shouted "What is WITH you people and punching me in the nuts?!" He shouted, that area still sore from Harolds earlier assault.

He grabbed her by the throat and began to choke her, his hands crushing her slender throat. Then, he realised what he could do to make her somewhat useful.

"Jake, get your ass out here" He said "It's time for Killing 101"

He paused, waiting to hear him crash through the undergrowth. As he approached, he loosened the grip on her neck and used his other hand to force her to look at him. She had to be able to speak, to beg, or he wouldn't be prepared for it when defending himself.

He looked up at Jake. "Shoot her." He commanded, his voice calm and cool. "Two in the chest. Go." He said, keeping his eyes on him, looking for any trace of self doubt.

All Jake wanted to do was take a piss. Seriously, it was a simple thing for a person to do in a world where pissing was a thing that normal people did. It was an incredibly human activity to say the least, and peeing in the outdoors was communing with nature and shit.

Literally, for five fucking seconds, all Jake wanted to do was take a piss.

And then all of a sudden, he's hearing Zach scream for his name, and crashing and struggling, and as Jake barely manages to shake off and zip himself up, he's throwing himself out of the bushes and seemingly out of goddamn nowhere, Zach has materialized this girl and is yelling at him to shoot.

Murder 101, indeed.

Two in the chest, he says. Jake raised his hand gun.

Two in the chest.

Before Jake realized it, the gun jumped in his hands, and two flowers blossomed in the girl's chest. Whoa.

Whoa.

And it didn't feel very much like anything at all. Jake was expecting some sort of psychological coping mechanism, or at least to puke, like he used to with the dear. But all he could think of to say was this.

"This death is brought to you by Verizon," he said.

Then he cleared his throat.

It's not like she was dead yet.

Woah. That was... Cold, to say the least. One liner and everything. There was no hesitation, just -As he'd requested- two rounds in the chest. He was actually a little proud of himself for that. A week ago, Jake would probably have passed out at the very thought of this, and now, he could kill. He could get out of this alive!

He let go of her head and stood up, brushing a few stray specks of blood from where her innards had.. Splashed. He looked at Jake.

"Well done mate, now, give me the gun." He said, holding his hand out. He noticed some hesitation. "Don't worry, I'm not gonna steal it" he said, trying to reassure him.

Then, he mumbled something and handed him the gun. He felt the weight of it in his hand, it was weirdly light, almost completely the opposite to what he'd been expecting. He walked around the side of the girl, the gun held loosely, almost casually by his side as he avoided the growing pool of blood.

He looked down at her, pointed the gun at her head. He could just let her bleed out, but that would give Jake the kill. And, well, he'd been in some serious fucking danger for this. He'd worked for it, he deserved another kill in his tally, to be Two-Fifths of the way home. He slowly curled his finger in, keeping the gun pointed, as steadily as he could, on her forehead.

BLAM

The pistol lurched in his hand, sending a jolt of pain up his arm, and a bullet into her brain. He looked down and he felt like the bottom of his stomach dropped out. He'd expected to see a little, round bullet hole between the eyes, not...

Well, it didn't look like a head anymore.

He looked away and handed the gun back to Jake.

Jake stared down at the dead body of the girl with a sort of numbness. Oh god. Oh GOD the blood. Color drained from his face and he fought to keep his minimal lunch down. It was sort of everywhere. There was no head now.

But this was what he had to do to survive.

His stomach turned as he realized that he had just shot some girl in cold blood, there was no defense to it, and he wouldn't even get the credit for the kill because Zach straight up did the killing blow, he sort of frowned at that. There was a lot going on in Jake's head right now...

but the number one thought was that he could not face Madelyn, she'd see right through him, and he wasn't sure she'd be able to be okay with this one.

He looked over at Zach as he was handing the gun back to him. He could easily run back to his little group sitting by the geyser, pretend he had just gotten lost, and pretend he had never done any of this...

Or he could follow Zach to Mae.

"Let's go, man," Jake said. Zach nodded.

Jake let Zach take the lead...

(Jake Langston and Zach Johnston continued elsewhere...)

It almost seemed to be working. Not that Eloise was under any illusion as to her odds of survival any more, not with her very broken foot still very much pinned underneath her own sledgehammer, not with blood streaming out of her broken nose and pain pounding through her body from every inch of flesh she had. But going down swinging was enough for her at this point, to be remembered as at least having tried, and not having just given up. Especially not after instigating the fight herself.

But then even that was taken away from her. Judging from the way Zach let go of her hair, and she fell to the floor, she must have done some damage. But judging from the way he stooped back down to lift her up by her throat instead, that damage had only been enough to make him angrier than he already was. But he didn't finish her. No, he made a show of gripping her neck as if to strangle her to death, but never enough to actually do it. Zach was speaking, calling to someone else, Eloise couldn't quite make out exactly what was being said, but she could guess she was being toyed with now. She could only hope it would be over quickly.

Another boy came over, and even if she could see clearly through the fuzz that was her state of consciousness, Eloise wouldn't have known who he was. He had a gun, he was pointing it at her. At least it would be quick after all, then.

Bang. Bang.

She'd been expecting some kind of pause first, maybe for one of them to taunt her, demand that she beg for mercy. Eloise hadn't had no intention of meeting such a demand, at first. No, the nut-shot had shown her defiance clearly enough, and she meant to proceed just as she'd started, not giving an inch of her own free will. But nothing could have prepared her for the pain that erupted in her torso, nor compared to the indescribable agony left in the wake of the two bullets.

Zach let go, and Eloise realised than that the hammer had parted company with her foot, because she landed on her knees, shaking, swaying, but stable enough to stay that way. Her head dropped forwards, revealing to her visually what she already knew well enough. Two expanding circles of red on the immaculate white of her tennis clothes, they'd already met in the space between them, and only seemed to grow ever faster the more she watched. Luckily she couldn't stay watching for long, her vision was beginning to fail her, even her sense of touch was beginning to peter out. A small mercy, for a young girl whose entire world is pain.

In the end, poor Eloise was just about lucid enough to realise her head was being lifted back up to look at Zach. Or rather, for him to look at her. The barrel of his gun was pressed against her forehead, must've been what had moved her in the first place. In light of what had happened, she'd quickly reassessed her priorities with regards to not giving up the satisfaction of begging. Ironically enough, by now she wasn't capable of asking for mercy, as only a hoarse rasp left her lips as she tried.

And as fragments Eloise Winterburn's skull made swift contact with the dirt behind her body, it was evident her desperate attempt at a plea had gone unheeded.
