Not sure if this'll spark any form of interest, but a few nights ago (from the day I'm writing this), I dreamt that I accidently damaged my SBK1 cart, and then when I tried to load it on my N64, a "prototype" of the game appeared instead of the original.
I don't remember much about it, other than the fact that the starting roster was slightly larger, with three additional characters, none of them being any of the ones we're familiar with (the Plus newcomers), and I envisioned one of them was a sibling to an already existing character, possibly a brown-haired brother for Nancy from what I remember.
The characters all had different, more simpler outfits than seen in the real game (I think Slash had brown hair 
), with the same going for the race courses, having not as much detail in their textures, the only one I believe I saw was a course that alluded to Rookie Mountain.
And that's pretty much it.
