I was contacted by Neil Sanderson, Editor & Publisher of MaritimeRadio.org. It's a website dedicated to the history of New Zealand's radio communication stations. He had published a first-hand account of the sinking of MV Monte Palomares in 1966. The article was written by the ship's electrician, Manolo Gonzalez, who was rescued along with three shipmates by the SS Steel Maker, Capt. Ove V. Hultin (38), Master. Another two were rescued by the USCGC Escanaba. Only six of the thirty-eight aboard the Spanish ship survived. I believe that Capt. Hultin went on to become a Panama Canal pilot.
The account is well worth reading. Click here to read the account.
