I'm not sure about dobrali se in this context (dobrać się in Polish means "to match each other"). In Polish we can say :
pokonali odległość z Moskwy do Jałty w 54 godziny.
z Moskwy do Jałty przejechali w 54 godziny.
droga (podróż) z Moskwy do Jałty zajęła im 54 godziny.
przybyli / przyjechali z Moskwy do Jałty w ciągu 54 godzin.
Or sth alike.

This all sounds a bit official to me. Especially 1, 3 and 4 - they are fine in a scientific article but not in a travelog.

How would you say it in Russian ? Maybe it would be enough to translate the sentence.

Мы добрались до Ялты из Москвы за 54 часа.
But that won't work because as you said dobrali se has different meaning.
I don't want to use dojehali because I already have jezda further in the same sentence, and repeating roots in one sentence is not very good in a literary text. So I am searching for a different verb to convey the same meaning, with possibility to express that the journey wasn't very easy. Russian добраться in this meaning has the connotation of difficulties on the way, and we had a lot.

How do you feel about stati na odpočinok (v Timišoare) instead of zastati na odpočinok?

Odpočinok is regular Slovianski word, listed in the dictionary. Why weird? Most Slavic languages have odpočivati, and West Slavic have odpočinek.

For me, as a czech, dobrali smo se iz A do B, is quite understandable as it is use in slovak in the form, vybrali se se na cestu, etc.
