Partial game translation in Interslavic

Zdrav!

I discovered Interslavic earlier this day and found both its concept and goal very promising and interesting. It seems to me that it could provide an especially good medium of communication in video games, so I decided to try my hand at translating a controls menu in GZDoom using the various tools provided on the Interslavic website, with additional help from an existing Russian translation as well as a native speaker of Croatian. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome!

Great idea! Interesting propositions.
My notes :
1/ Interslavic seems to avoid -l- epenthetic, so maybe uprav-jenje (from upraviti; but I think it could be upravjAnje from imperfective upravjati). ( I myself am not strong against that it as far as it's a consequent decision.)
2/ ě appears usually where Croatian has je/ije (so izměniti since izmijeniti); but since it is not always the case, perhaps a more secure option is to use simply e everywhere.
3/ I prefer dlja (as in Russian для, Polish has dLa but it's because in Polish a consonant L works often like "a functional soft")
4/ Pritisknite na novy klaviš - the preposition na, i think, is not obligatory here.
5/ I was considering how to translate fire and secondary fire : if it's about shooting, so maybe : strěľba / paľba ? "secondary" - maybe drugotny (sk druhotný) ? (sekundarny is also possible but rather long). I myself wonder what you would choose for "burst fire" as in Brutal Doom.
6/ for zoom - perhaps povečšiti ? weapon - oružje (since it appears both in Russian and Croatian) ?
That's for now.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve taken all of it into consideration, considering you seem more proficient at the language than I am. I wonder where the word “povečšiti” comes from, though?

I also checked the Interslavic word for “weapon”, and it seems to be “oruže,” so I know that for sure.

Hey, that looks really cool!

I don't know the game myself (nor do I know anything about games), but for what it is worth, I quite agree with all Bandziol's points here.

2) As for Ě, Croatian is not the most reliable option here. In general, Ě happens whenever Ukrainian has І where Russian has Е (or Polish has IE/IA). Of course, you can also check the dictionary (English: http://steen.free.fr/interslavic/dynami ... onary.html, Polish: http://steen.free.fr/interslavic/slowni ... iczny.html). But it is okay to leave out Ě altogether.

3) Indeed, use either dlja (+ gen.) or za (+ acc.).

6) I'm not sure where you found "oruže" in the dictionary, but in any case, it should indeed be "oružje".

As for secondary, I think "vtorny" is okay.

A few details:

"vdolu" is incorrect. Use either "vniz" or "vdol" (personally, I prefer "vvrh" and "vniz", but that's matter of taste).

"myš" is feminine, so the instrumental should be "myšju". Feminine instrumentals on -em/-om are typically Serbocroatian, I think.
Same goes for klaviatura: klaviaturoju.

Cheers,
Jan

I like using imperative forms (like in the Croatian version) : idi napred !
Turn left / right - maybe: obrni se v (na ?) levo ! / pravo !
Crouch - prisedi !

BTW, what does it mean "strafe" alone (while "strafe left / right" is translating like "going left / right") ?

Thanks for the replies. “Strafe” just means to move horizontally; to the left or right.

It’s in the lexicon.

Yeah, but it's pretty outdated and messy.

Code: Select all

vooruženy armed a1
oružje arms nn 1
oruženosec squire weapons-bearer nm 1
elektrošokove oruže taser n1
oruže weapon nn1
oruženje weaponry nn1
oruženosec weapons-bearer squire nm1

I would translate "weaponry" simply as oružje. "weapons-bearer" / "armed" - maybe oboruženy (/ oboruženec ?) ?
