Interests kendo, beekeeping, beer making, winemaking, ballroom dancing, classical guitar, kayaking, Amateur Radio (hence the combination of my nickname and radio callsign), target shooting, bicycling, reading (my mother taught me when I was 3), crossword puzzles, trainspotting.

My avatar is from Samurai X, the move he is making is called a "do" (doh) cut in kendo, where the sword strikes the right side of the opponent's body as the wielder moves forward toward his opponent, then takes two steps diagonally to the right to draw the sword across the front of the body. The target is always covered with a heavy piece of protective equipment, so we never intentionally strike anywhere that is not protected. My website has much more information about kendo if you are interested.

They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

-- Benjamin Franklin, 1755, to the Pennsylvania State Legislature

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

-- Former US President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt in an editorial to the Kansas City Star May 7, 1918
