Newbie Joining Guide!

So you’ve found [SS], but you’re not sure where to start. Maybe this is your first forum-style RPG, your first urban fantasy, or maybe even your first jump into the pool of collaborative writing: Whatever the case, this guide is here to help you. It will tell you where to go, how to get there, and what to do once you’ve arrived!

Firstly, we’d like to let you know that you should never be afraid to ask a question, no matter how silly it seems. Our members are knowledgeable about our general lore, our Support Staff (Patchworkurchin and NekiSan in the CBOX) are there to help you understand the mechanics of the site. Our admins are friendly and check their PMs often, so never hesitate to leave a message if you feel there’s a question no one else can answer.

Before You Begin

There’s a lot of literature here on [SS] and it can be difficult to wade through it all. Don’t be discouraged. Certain things are more crucial than others. Here are the bare minimums you need to check out before you apply:

1. The Plot: you should take a look at before you start your application, likely you’ve already done this, but just be sure [SS] is the kind of story-line you’re looking for.

2. The Rules: These are incredibly important. Reading the rules will not only help you understand how to go about applying, but it will also explain the logistics of certain in-character events, our periodic roll calls, and other site policy. This will be your ground work as an [SS] member.

3. Races: These are all of the currently available races with lore here on site. If you have a character in mind that doesn’t fit one of these, [SS] accepts member-made races! Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild.
There are also a few places you might want to check out if you’re interested in jumping right in to the plot.

If you feel like digging a little deeper and getting involved in site-wide plots right away, you'll want to take a peek at the following:

4. Canon list: This is a skeletal listing of the canons that appear in our subplot and gives the most basic vital information about our canon characters. The canon system on [SS] is different from other sites, in that they are essentially hats that your own original character can wear!

5. Sub plots: These are all of the sub-plots that we have now on [SS] that feature canon characters. They are story lines that fit into the larger story line of [SS], and include close personal relationships, drama, and sometimes long term character growth. They are an excellent way to ensure certain relationships or connections with your character.

6. Wanted Listings: This is a collection of characters and plots that our members are currently in need of. Check it out to see if there is an idea here you would like to adopt, or if an add here fits the character you are planning on creating. You can also check out the PB's we would Like to See thread if you're having a hard time finding a face for your character.

7. Factions: This is a list of all of the in-character factions or groups that we have on site. It explains the Vampire covens and Shifter groups in more depth, as well as more complicated groups like Humans for Humanity.

These groups not only contribute to the overall site plot, but also are usually the start of many sub-plots.

Now that you’ve looked over all of the preliminary bits, you are read to create your character.

8. Application: This is a fairly straightforward application, with explinations of anything that might be confusing. If you have an application question, our members in the CBOX can help you, or you can see below for some other question-answering options.

After Acceptance

So you’ve applied, and you’ve been accepted. HOORAY! But now what?

1. Claims: You will be directed in your acceptance message to do your “Claims.” This is a term we use on [SS] to describe a few things. The first is your Face Claim or avatar claim. This will reserve the face you choose for your character for as long as you are playing that character. “Claims” also refer to your Who’s Whom. The Who’s Whom is a comprehensive list of all of our players and which characters they play. This is to help with plotting, so you can match up the name in the cbox with the name of the character.

2.Introductions: Here is a thread where you can introduce you to everyone else! Be welcomed by new members and dip your toes in using this thread.

With all intents and purposes, once your claims are done, you are ready to jump in on [SS]. The best place to do that is in the places below:

3. The Open threads Thread: Here we keep a list of all of the threads that are currently wearing an [OPEN] tag. This means that you are free to post in these threads. If the thread is particularly old (a month or more) you may want to PM the other character(s) in it, just to make sure it hasn’t died. This is also where you can post if you’ve opened your own thread.

4.Plotting and Shipping: Here is where you find the more traditional “Shipping” pages. These are places where people gather up potential plots for their characters and discuss thread ideas with fellow members. Spamming these pages can often lead to some very interesting interactions.

5. The Cbox: If you’re shy, that’s okay, but sometimes the CBOX is the best place to go to find a thread. Looking for someplace to play? Giving a little “Hey, is anyone free to thread?” in the CBOX can go a very long way.

6. Today's Active Topics: This hard-to-see but oh-so-lovely little link can be found on the main page of the site all the way at the bottom, just before the block of the skin that shows online members. Clicking on it pulls up a list of all the threads that have been posted in most recently. This is a good way to keep track of what is happening right now on sight, or to see if anyone has opened up a free thread.

After Acceptance: Questions and Concerns

So you’ve done all that and you’ve gotten started, but you’re still unsure of a few things, where do you go?

1. Ask an Admin: This thread is an FAQ style ask-thread that is monitored by the admins. This is the place to ask any question about anything to have it answered by an admin.

Too shy to talk to the admins in public? That’s okay! If you prefer some more private communications try

2. PMs: This system can be a little strange, but PMing an admin account (Lynx, Kayla, or Neki) can get your question answered fast, and quietly.

After Acceptance: Get Involved

We want [SS] to be a community, and an RP family for all our members, so we make sure to give you ample ways to get involved with your fellow members out of character.

1. The Member Center: This is a section of the board that houses some of our OOC threads, including the intro threads and the game threads. This is a good place to go just to socialize if the CBOX is a little too fast paced for you. It also includes a graphics requests sub-forum where you can ask some of our lovely members to make some banners for you and an absences and hiatuses thread where you can let us know if you’re going to be gone for very long. That way we don’t worry ;D

2. Monthly Contests: Every month or two, we hold a set of friend contests: one is for writing, and one is for those who can make graphics. The rules are always in the first post, and each contest has it’s own theme. Winner get featured in the sidebar and sometimes even awarded a prize!

3. General Creative: Here is a hodge-podge area of the board that not only includes graphics showcases, but personal Alternate Universe stories, fanfictions, and other drabbles about the site. This is a fun place to go to expand the universe of [SS] or to figure out what your fellow members like to do.
