Dear all
I came to a question of the book name of Psalms. We say it is Psalms, but the first chapter we call it Psalm 1 (without s). However, for the name of book of Proverbs, we call it Proverbs 1 (with s). Is it correct? Can we say Psalm 1?
Why the book of Psalms have such a special property?

thanks

The Hebrew for Proverbs translates to "The Proverbs of Solomon"

The Hebrew for Psalms translates to "Praises". The Septuagint translated it to "Psalms" (see also Luke 20:42; Acts 1:20). The English title comes from the Greek translation. Each individual musical item was called a "Psalm".

On a similar topic, I wish folks would stop referring to "Revelation" as "Revelations". ;)

A psalm is an entire song or poem, whereas a proverb is a saying (which can be as short as one line). So roughly speaking, each psalm is a whole chapter long, while each proverb is only a few lines long.

So the full names would be:
- "The first chapter of the Book of Psalms" or "the first psalm" or "psalm number one"
- "The first chapter of the Book of Proverbs"
- "The book of Revelation" (singular)

The first Psalm is Psalm 1:1-6.
The first Proverb is Proverbs 1:7.
The first Revelation is the entire book of Revelation.

I still make this mistake all the time.
"The man who is really forgiven, is anxious not to offend again; the possession of justification leads to an anxious desire for sanctification." - Spurgeon

So Book of Psalms is the only book having different names for book and chapter?[POSTCOMMENTMYFFIPC17572]
