Can I post this topic and not get banned? Why does this feature work this way, etc?

Hi all,

I have noticed that the counters at the bottom of the main page typically state that there are hundreds of users online at this site but only a few registered users...

The others are a combination of actual visitors lurking at the site and search engine automated "bots" (software scanners) scanning and indexing the site so it comes up in searches performed at their search engine home pages. More often than not, there are more bots at the site than actual human lurkers.

Ah!  Bots! I thought it might be people doing research since there are so many resources and links to resources on this site (truly amazing, really), but I imagine there are some of those here, in addition to the bots as you say.

p.s. thanks Mr. R for the better title (I'll do better in future:)

Hey Mr. R,  I have another question about the numbers, please:

When we go into a forum we can see the number of views a particular thread has received -- are views by bots (if that is possible) included in that number, and if so, are bot-views the majority or even vast majority of that number?

Thanks,

Don

Don,

Fortunately, search bots do not factor into thread views.
