FIFA U-18 World Cup?

Apparently the FIFA Council looking to introduce an U-18 World Cup to be held annually, although the existing U17 & U20 tournaments could be dropped. Depending on how quickly this all happens (if it even does), and results in India later today, England could end up being double world champions for the indefinite future, might need to stock up on those custard creams now...

As much as I'm a fan of getting new tournaments in, replacement isn't really the way to go in my opinion, will end up making a few of the 'older' continental youth tournaments have a bit less meaning. Although for the opportunities to qualify, replacing two biennial tournaments of 24 teams with one annual 48-team event basically doubles a nation's chances of reaching a FIFA tournament...

Also worth mentioning that a FIFA U-18 tournament would be a bit of a throwback...

FIFA would do well to standardise age group competitions across continents (i.e. not having Euro U-21 tournament as qualifier for an U-23 Olympics).

I guess in the case of the Olympics the Euro U-21 tournament is U-23 in all but name anyway, they just fail to accommodate the extra year's difference from Euros to Olympics meaning some players might miss out (especially if someone more senior gets chosen as an overager). Other than that the tournaments aren't really synchronised by name around the world but they are in nature.

Don't know how they're planning to do qualifying for an U-18 World Cup each year though, for Europe would it basically be 'everyone who qualifies for the previous year's Euros'?

FIFA Council announcements on tournaments set to come tomorrow, could include any number ofย these proposed changes (real mixed bag there) to the international calendar, one (or three to be pedantic) of which being the above-mentioned annual 48-team U-18 World Cup.

I would like to see this (women's league) used as an opportunity to integrate women's football with men's, at international level, along the lines of the parallel tournament structure I've suggested on this forum before.

From today's announcements:
  • The FIFA U-18 World Cup will not be created (not sure whether that's 'for now' or a permanent decision)
  • The U-20 and U-17 World Cups remain, 2019 editions to be hosted by Poland and Peru respectively
  • Same thing for the women's youth tournaments (except the ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ/๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช part)
  • FIFA Women's League not decided yet
  • Club World Cup thingem even more not decided yet so Confederations Cup stays alive for now ๐Ÿ‘ย
  • Oh, and VAR definitely happening at the World Cup this summer which will probably take most of the headlines

Which is fair, given all the other points are essentially non-announcements.

Perhaps the others were deliberately non-announcements, so that people would give more credit to them for at least announcing something with VAR.
