Realised that talk about FIFA's planned super special awesome ultra special super sexy transformation sequence (in $25B) for the Club World Cup might be cluttering the place used to discuss the more... palatable version they currently have.

To start with, some thinkpiece.

Complete rubbish.  Not interesting at all...

All clubs should have to qualify.  Rich clubs are already rich enough without competitions like this to make them even richer...

If a team is invited and accepts, they should be relegated from the top division as punishment...

By this point it completely defeats any purpose of taking the current version away, unless they keep the existing format through to 2020 and have this as a weird expensively-produced pilot episode.

Would be better off if they just kept the current one as is anyway and run the expanded one as a separate mega-event that they clearly want it to be, maybe call it the FIFA Football Uber-Club Knockout via Uninspiring Performance. But their creative department's so off their game recently we'd just end up with the "FIFA Club Trophy" or something.

This would be a new one, expansion before the expansion's even confirmed. Potentially though, a chance to at least partly fix the perception it's a "rich clubs > everyone else" kind of deal. Or just make it worse, could go either way.

Meanwhile, South Africa declare their interest in hosting the still-unconfirmed thing.
