Elieja Reyner (el-LEE-ha)

Age:
17 years old

Race:
Human

Physical Description:
To keep his bangs out of his eyes, Elieja keeps his black hair just long enough to tuck behind his ears. His playfully brown eyes have a tint of red when hit by direct sunlight, and his face is almost always dirty. He tosses his clothes each morning and replaces them with something “new” from whatever area he finds himself in. A majority of the time, his rags are too large and occasionally, he finds himself slightly underdressed for the occasion. He keeps a shoulder bag on him at all times, to carry a few trinkets he’s grown attached to, and a spare outfit if he thinks he may need a quick getaway. His build is on the scrawnier side, which leaves him more agile and faster than most of the larger folks around (he weighs around 180, can lift about 160 lbs, and is around 5’7” tall).

Yet to come out of his shell, Elieja tends to come off as shy due to his semi-reserved behavior. He considers himself less of a person than pretty much anyone on the planet as a result of being a non-magical human born in Browndale; although it was a lie, he was told even his mother had a minor magical ability - he sees himself as worthless and scum-of-the-Kaia. While Elieja is passive by nature (that comes from his mother), he finds trickery enticing and always enjoys watching others’ misery (the father). Elieja has always been under Nealt’s wing and is just beginning to wonder what life would be like on his own, eager to find his true abilities.

Elieja was born to Niala, a poor, local resident of Browndale. Niala, who wasn’t very known, or dangerous, or sly, or magical, took care of her boy as best as she could with what little she had. Although the infant wasn’t quite properly dressed, or often fed regularly, Niala gave him all of her heart and loved him with more than she had, until she was killed by a group of local gang members. Niala had kept in touch with a friend of the boy’s father, Nealt, who had grown fond of the infant when Niala was caring for him. It was Nealt who found Elieja sobbing quietly in his make-shift crib when his mother never came home. Nealt took the boy in and raised him as a street rat, having the boy bring the old riffraff every last scrap he managed to scrounge up. Nealt taught Elieja every dirty trick in the book and within two years Elieja had gotten pretty accustomed to the street life.

Elieja was brought up with two other children that Nealt had taken under his wing, Tiry was the first to join after Elieja, followed a few years later by Frest. It wasn’t until after Elieja reached the age of thirteen that he noticed how much harder it was for him than the other two to perform sleight-of-hand and use the subtle trickery of words. He tried to not let it bother him and he worked twice as hard as Tiry and Frest, just trying to keep up with them. Nealt noticed Elieja seemed to lack any magical ability at all, and kept him under a close eye, even asking Tiry to watch out for him.

Time went by and the children grew older, as Nealt seemed to stay the same old age he always was. Frest, having learned enough to satisfy his need, left in search of a new life on his own. Elieja pictured him finding a family to start and imagined the wonderful adventures Frest would have with his new wife and children. Tiry - who stayed as long as she could bear, always keeping an eye out for trouble Elieja attracted - packed the three items she had to her name and left for Amano. Tiry had told them she had heard stories about a body of water named “The Bath” and she wished more than anything to make her way there. Elieja almost cried when they watched her leave for Nam Dae.

Nealt did not wait long before he tried to urge Elieja to venture on his own; it was time for the boy to grow up and learn what it meant to truly live in the “Magic City.” Elieja had thought about leaving Nealt many times, yet he found himself unable to run away from the life he had provided. Nealt tried giving the child difficult tasks to get him gone, and with each one, Elieja wanted another, more difficult one; he always came back.
