It's a city! Or was, anyway.

It was too early (Tori never slept anyway, not if she could help it, not sober, and it wasn't comforting to sleep anymore anyway, not with Marcus and Ari gone) and her suit was probably not the kind of clothes to be wearing but it was the most physically appropriate clothes she had, and at least she had on a pair of shoes with a decent sole and good support.

Tori fidgeted, head jerking about in birdlike movements as she kept jumping at the sound of things that didn't exist. She hadn't bothered (read: thought, remembered, realized) to bring water or food, but she at least had a backpack that she'd scrounged up somewhere.

Exactly what time did Jack mean by 'morning'?

Jack had meant 'before the sun rises so no one notices us leaving." But he should have been more specific it seems. He sat with his back against the leg of the water tower and wished for the one luxury he missed from the Old Days; his iPod. How much quicker would time pass if he could be listening to music right now. But he had no such luck. All he could hear were the hundreds of over-lapping songs of birds, not even trying to blend together in a harmony. They clashed and ruined each other. He shook his head and peered the horizon for any signs of human-sized movement. Finally, he saw Tori.

He stood up and brushed the dirt off his sharp black suit and smirked when he saw Tori wearing a similar outfit. What a pair they would look, as they marched across the wasteland. When she finally got up to him, he hmph'd, but said nothing about how he had waited. It was his own fault after all.

"You know how to fire a gun properly?" He said, and started walking, expecting her to follow.

Vaguely terrified couldn't begin to describe the look on Torindra's face. She followed Jack, and shook her head with a squeak.

"Of course not. Oh, well. You're going to have to shift after the next few miles. Don't want you being unable to defend yourself if it comes to that." He kept walking and shifted his rifle and his pack further to the middle of his back.

Oh Jack. If only you knew.

She continued to follow, looking somewhat more miserable now than paranoid, dangling the backpack from a strap in her hand.

They walked.

And walked.

And continued walking.

There was silence. And walking.

Jack stopped for a second, looked around, lightning-quick brought his gun up to his shoulder and fired a single shot. Tori wouldn't be able to see what he shot. He turned to her.

"Go. Shift now. It's not safe from here on out. I was hoping we could make it a little further. But I'll cover you."

She hardly even realized what he was doing until the gun had already fired, sending Tori into a shrunken wince. She looked at him, gnawing on a thin, chapped lip, and nodded.

Tori's thin fingers made quick work of the buttons on her blouse, and once she undid the button and zipper, her slacks practically fell off of her hips.

Tori wasn't very good at Shifting. She only did it on her Phase, when absolutely necessary. Hard to smoke a cigarette with no hands, and damn near impossible to drink alcohol if she couldn't open the bottle with her own fingers and pour it out, because nobody was going to do it for her.

She almost didn't remember how to make it happen when it was voluntary.

Fur started to sprout, and Tori whimpered through growing teeth. It didn't look like it was going to happen very quickly.

Slinger, to his credit, turned his back when she began to disrobe. He peered out, watching for any slight movement. He pulled his gun up, tracked something for a few meters, then let it fall again. He turned his head briefly to see how close she was to being done. Of course she's nowhere close. That would be too easy.

bang bang.
Two more shots in quick succession. Jack had to squint to see if he had hit his targets. But he had. Two vaguely human figures were lying motionless in the snow, not far from the first. Tori needed to hurry. There were probably others.

By now, Tori had collapsed onto the ground, unable to hold her misshapen form up onto contorting limbs. Rather pathetic, with her face in the dirt like that. She was pretty sure she knew what Jack wanted, but she didn't know how to do it.

Shifting faster meant focus, desire, concentration, and Torindra possessed none of these applicable toward her wolf form. She hated this. Hated everything about it. Hated the nose that told her when humans were near, hated the fact that because of this form she felt this terrible, terrible need to bite them, hated that stupid empathy that made her feel everything from the people around her. She wasn't even dead yet, because of the monster that took her one night, smiling when he found her in the forest, and ripped her flesh open before he licked it, pressing his tongue up and down the raw wounds. At least by now she'd have been dead from overdose or alcohol poisoning or liver failure or something if it hadn't been for that.

Fur continued to spread over her body, white rippling up with the occasional rust marks that streaked in odd places.

Slinger didn't keep his rifle raised, as he continued to peer around for more targets. The sights on it were less useful than his eyes were now, because of the narrowing of vision. He was anxious. He chewed awkwardly on his lip and wished Tori would finish.

Movement. The rifle flew up to his shoulder, and he traced it.

Fuck. He fumbled quickly in his bag, searching for something. He found what he was looking for, and pulled out a small bag of bullets. He quickly ejected the one in the cartridge and replaced it. He pulled the gun back up to his shoulder and fired, five times, in quick succession. In the distance, there was a mighty roar of a bear. A very angry, rabid bear. Hopefully the only one around.
