Here is a project I have wanted to do ever since I heard that HK were releasing the B-17E/F after their initial G release.
There were a few improvements made on the E/F kit after modellers comments of the G. A nice sign of a kit manufacturer listening to the buying public. My plan is to display the kit on a base along with her crew and mascot dog 'Stuka'.

So here is the box top shot.

To add to the kit I got the Eduard Big-Ed set part II which covers the fuselage interior, HGW wood decals for the interior floors, doors and other parts, HGW seat belts which include resin cockpit seat pads and the Master turned barrels.

For the (large!) base I got an A1 piece of foam board, some concrete looking wallpaper, an 8th Air Force sticker and an A4 sheet with decals of the 'girls' either side of the nose.

And so the base was done today. Although I still need to weather the concrete.

:woo: thats a bit of an understatement.
I can't remember the last time I was this excited/nervous about building a kit. I only hope I can get close to some of the wonderful builds I've seen of this.

:wow: A lot of investment there!

I have some of the HGW stuff, it's very good.

I don't know what you have in mind, but I'd recommend some sort of frame for the foam board. If it's attached securely it should reduce any tendency of the board warping.

It will eventually be attached to a slightly larger piece of wood to add rigidity as well as a border.

And so the Belle build begins.
The fuselage has the nose and tail gunner parts seperate to allow for different versions. The instructions would have you build the fuselage up as well as the nose and tail gunner housing before joining them together. I have decided to attach these pieces first to give me a chance to have a bigger canvas to work on as well as being able to have better join seams.

And although not mentioned in the instructions I am undecided whether or not to open up the tail gunner entry hatch.

Looks good Steve. I presume that the plastic is typical HK models and really tough?

Today I started on the soundproof padding in the nose section. For this I am using the very soft cloths used for cleaning glasses that I got from an optitian.
Hopefully it will look ok under a coat of paint.

Looks ok with a coat of paint, although there are still a lot of details to be added yet.

Started work on the nose area. Eduard etch used along with a scratch built bomb sight storage box. I have also adjusted the nav table to fit on the starboard side.
I have aslo cut off the boxes on the radio compartment floor to make doing the wooden floor easier.

A couple of changes, thanks to Mike and Karl's (from the Memphis Belle Memorial Association) help and advice.
Nav table and storage box changed slightly and the kits bombadiers floor cut off and plasticard used to make it a bit more like the original.

How much of this can be seen once the nose sections are joined up ?
Be a shame for it to disappear forever :o

I decided to re-do the wood decal as it looked a little to dark. So I applied a white base coat this time which has lightened the wood a little.

After a chat with a couple of guys from the Memphis Belle Memorial Association I have ordered a light pine decal as the one I've used is a bit to red.
:wall: back to the drawing board as I want to get this as right as possible.

Back on with Belle and I finally decided I would open the tail gunners door.

The pine decals arrived last week from HGW so they were put on last night. Looks much better than the red wood.

Wheel well assembled and installed in the lower wing which then had the top half glued on. Their a bit large.

This morning I slotted the wings on the fuselage sides to see how the fit was and happy to say it was perfect. I have not decided yet whether to have the wings glued in place or removeable. :hmm:
