Trying to keep Diablo 2 interesting, some times, I reach for the books on my shelf to look for ideas.

And that happened this morning.

I like lightning and thunder. In real life, I love these two things, and am fond of watching a good storm. In D2 I love lightning as well, the way it crackles and hisses and pops. Blizzard did a damn good job designing lightning graphics. (Hey credit where credit is due!)

I have done pure lightning sorcies, (Several) and my last Lightning Fixation Project was Valerie Voltage, my lightning specialist Assassin. She did rather well when not facing lightning immunes. So I knew I wanted another lightning based character, but, I needed a theme.

I pulled down my book of Incan gods and goddesses this morning, and began looking. And I found what I wanted.

Catequil. The Incan god of Thunder and Lightning. He was also an oracle, a very kind and loving sort of god, rather unusual in his time era, because he did not demand human sacrifice. He was a very strong protector of human kind, and was often known to walk in human guise to talk and speak with the silly mortals that so facinated him. He was also a murderer. He had slain several powerful gods, demigods, and vile demons because of their ill treatment of man kind. His fury was that of the heavens, and his vengeance was swift and um... shocking.

I have a drawing of him as well in the book, and I must say, he is rather cool looking in his war garb. He wore some sort of scale or ring looking mail, plated in gold and silver it seems, a wicked looking dagger, a small wooden buckler, and a funny looking helmet that was big and round. His dagger was said to be enchanted with the power of the heavens, and when thrown, would always return to his hand. (This guy seems an awful lot like Thor. Primitive cultures always seem to focus on certian traits)

So. How do I turn this into a Diablo 2 character? I had to sit down and really think about this one. I thought about a throwing barb with a lot of elemental lightning charms, but, in my mind, that failed miserably. And not to be racist in any way, but, the Barb was to pale to be an Incan god anyways. This guy had very very dark skin. (He looked like he was a living piece of obsidian)

And then it struck me. A Paladin. Holy shock was the obvious choice. Throwing daggers a must. Fist of the Heavens as well. Lots of lightning damage jewels socketed into armor and such, and as many lightning damage charms as I could carry. Yes, lightning immunes will kick my butt, but, thats ok. I will figure out a way to work around them. I will also try to keep gear as it was in the picture. Small wooden bucklers or small shields. Scale or ring mail. Some sort of hat, probably a full helm because they make pallies look like bowling ball heads.

And the back the story to drive the Variant Mindset. Catequil, peering into other realms, sees Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, plotting to take over the world. The human beings, fickle and funny as they are, seem rather helpless, so, old and wise Catequil takes on yet another human avatar form and decides to help. (Well, he would do damn near anything to protect the humans that he loves from disaster, so I guess crossing through time and space is possible to get to another world lol )

I dunno about mercs. I guess the idea here would be to find a native to this world that he could befriend, and teach him the local customs so he could fit in.

Other than that, I dunno. I guess I will just let his story happen. Any comments, ideas, or feedback would be most welcome.

First of all, that sounds pretty good, both the role and the character. I have a thought that might work very well. Rogue mercs get special attacks when the wield +skill or +ama skill items (although the canNOT wield ama-ONLY items). +1(2?) is every-shot-a-fire-arrow, +2(1?) is every-shot-a-cold-arrow, but +3 is the most 'unusual', it's a "lightning hose" which is fairly short distance, low power at low lvl and decent later on. A setup like cliffhanger (+2) and tarnhelm(+1) would work, or spirit shroud/+1amaCirclet/+1ama Bow. (Note +1 ama, not +1 bow skills)

On the practical side, removing one or two items shifts here down to a cold or fire elem attack for immunes.

I can't figure out if Open Wounds bypasses physical immunes and actually does damage to them.

You can hit a physical immune, with an attack, as your "charge up balls" will increase with a "hit," but your applied physical damage is reduced by 100%.

However, I could have sworn that when I was doing Phoenix Strike with Occhidiangela (the Rogue Turned Assassin) on a Physical Immune Boss last week -- she was still wielding a Steel Shamshir, not King's Grace-- that blood was spurting out. Now that was either:

The blood spurting to show damage, which I don't recall coming from lightning or Ice before

or

It was Open Wounds operating

or

It was the Open Wounds operating graphically, but not actually working internally.

Does anyone know how it works? I may be able to mess about with that on Hell diff this weekend if I can isolate a physical immune by himself and then lay into him with Steel.

I realize that Open WOunds is indeed a physical sort of damage, but something about the blood spurting has my little roguish Head spinning.

Or maybe I need to lay off the caffeine.

Do physical immunes bleed when you hit them with normal attack?

I would guess that they do... but I don't know, since I disabled them...

If phys immunes bleed as readily as non-phys, then you have an anwser about the graphics part...

Open Wound bleeds PIs and drains their life as it should be.

I was, blood all over the ground.

It has given me some ideas . . . and of course, one of the ideas is utterly toast already.

I was going to make two Steel Claws for my assassin . . . and Steel only works on swords and maces . . . not on claws. Drat. Oh well, gonna try some other ideas.

The only real problem is the -5 life regen, which you need to counteract with at least +5. I suppose a skull in a socket would do the trick . . .
