Summary:
"Some people got up in arms over the advertising in the new Patch for NWN. This latest patch has a big ad for their update on the main splash screen. Somebody made mention of it on the forums and this is what Derek French From Bioware had to say......

'You are welcome! I know its quite shocking to find that we actually make more games that just the original Neverwinter Nights and that we aren't going to just shut down the company after the release of NWN. Its because of that we want to make you aware of the other upcoming titles, because, quite frankly, we want to stay in business and keep making games for our fans. The SoU expansion is going to be fantastic and KotOR is just amazing. Hmmmmm. Maybe we should start selling X10 systems, too? Nah, we will just still with making computer RPGs.

I am not sure what I think of advertising in the game, but so long as it is only on the splash screen I do not blame them for wanting to try and sell updates. Mind you another player made comment on the forums that he did not like seeing advertising on his game, and this was the response.

'Um, its not your launcher. Its ours. We were just giving you a preview of what the XP1 launcher will look like. Showing you new art. That was the intent.Guess we better stop releasing screenshots and content on the community site, too, because its offensive, right?

Now tell me, does this REEK of bad PR, or is it just me? I swear, gaming companies are going to Hell more and more. And you know what? It's not because of the producers anymore. It's pure asshole-ish elitism, straight from the development teams.

Thoughts?

have a problem with SOME advertising especailly when they are selling products they make and done in the way that the user can opt out of viewing it again after the initial splash. Advert attachment to game has been with us since the very early days. I even liked some of them, and thankful to be informed.

However, yes, their attitude leaves much to be desired.
"Um, its not your launcher. Its ours...."
LoL
Well, this is my damn computer, go jerk off somewhere else.

And you know what? Aside from the somewhat annoying (and even this is so much a non-issue that it practically rips a whole in the fabric of existence) "Coming Soon", I enjoyed the new look. Simply because it's new.

I, like you, don't mind the occasional "Hey, we've got this coming out", so long as it's not intrusive. And, quite frankly, the splash screen ISN'T obtrusive.

Having read the threads from which the quoted text comes from in their entirety, I admit to having softened slightly on the issue. However, I still stand by my argument that his attitude, and moreover his past actions, are unacceptable behavoir for someone in his position. As such, I honestly don't think I'll be buying EITHER expansion, and maybe not even another Bioware game, unless it's danm well worth it. I'm not so cynical and spiteful as to pass up a great game simply because of an elitist prick, but I'm not about to shell out $60+ dollars for a halfway enjoyable game and know that it's paying that elitist arsehole's salary. Sorry, but that ain't how I play.

Interesting...I just got around to sucking down that 17.8 MB patch this past night (I figure since my computer can actually play NWN now I might as well try for all those caster classes I was unable to play before). To be honest, I wasn't aware of a NWN expansion until I saw the splash screen. I didn't find it obtrusive, and honestly, if there is anything that Bioware has a history of doing, it's using their current games to promote their future games. All throughout the Baldur's Gate series, there have been references and allusions to Neverwinter Nights (even in the original Baldur's gate back in 1998, remember Lord Foreshadow outside Nashkel?). This splash screen is just par for the course.

That being said, Derek French must have been in an extremely grumpy mood that day, because from my experience lurking in the pre-release NWN message boards, Bioware is typically one of the most friendly and open companies as far as their official forums are concerned, and I wouldn't have expected something like that from them. I don't know what to make of it but I hope that stuff like this is not what we will come to expect out of Bioware, I've still got faith in them to maintain good relations with their fans.

So far I've been having fun with NWN again, I downloaded the rest of the Penultima modules that hadn't been released when I stopped playing and got all the Penultima Rerolled modules out so far, plus a few other ones that were near the top of the NWVault ranking list. Sorcerors are fun when your computer is fast enough to allow you to do things like see what is happening in combat and zoom out beyond the area immediately around your character, but it's still a lot harder than what I've been used to with my Ftr14/Bar2 from the official campaign who could simply kill everything on autopilot without any intervention from me.

Looks like Derek is trying to the "jerk producer" award that the guy from Blizzard got when he said "we know what our custoemrs want more than they do" when talking about Diablo 2.

Of course, with all the whining that is par for the course on any game companies web-site he may have just been tired of people bitching. I know I would not have lasted a fraction of the time some of these PR folks do before telling people to go bugger themselves and just leave if all they do is complain about minor little stuff.

Most game companies seem to fall into the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" syndrome becasue their fans are mental or imature or both. Tough job.
