Has anyone ever bought snowdrops "in the green" by mail order? I noticed a few places advertising in GW mag. & I'd like to have lots next year, so any recommendations/ warnings would be welcome.

I bought some double snowdrops in the green several years ago mail order, they came in good condition and I planted them straight away, they flowered the following year and have been flowering and multiplying ever since.

On a TV program recently they said "don't buy bulbs they'll never flower. Buy a pot and plant it". This was just after I'd planted my bulbs.
I have snowdrops in bloom at the moment from those bulbs.

Snowdrop bulbs have never worked for me, though all other kinds are fine. Shall have to try getting some in the green.

Kent cob- don't suppose you remember the supplier? Cheapeat I've seen are 9 for 100 + p&p, so that must be a lot cheaper than buying bulbs, too! think I'll give it a go.

Hi Nigella, I puchased mine in the green from an advert in a magazine (East Anglian bulbs rungs a bell about 7 for a 100?), they survived OK and are multiplying well.
Have read since that the best way of planting them is from bulbs though - seems like you pay your money, you take your chance

Have bought snowdrops 'in the green' a couple of times by mail order in the past and no problems. I ordered from a company called Florajac based in the Fens but have not seen them advertise in the gardening press this year. Will have another look.

Picklemonster- I had just posted my order to Anglia Bulbs when I read your reply- so hope it's the same company! Cheaper than the others but a basic, no frills, no website company, by the look of it! Will let you all know when they arrive.

Sox used Jacques Amand when he was in the landscaping business. It was fantastic to go up there with him and buy thousands of bulbs.
What was even better was that we used to go into the factory area where they did the packing and we always came away with way over order. Now I wonder where they used to end up?
One year was particularly good because they gave us 300 blue hyacinth bulbs and we planted them out in our old garden. Boy what a beautiful show when they came up

I've never even been there, though I've noticed them advertising in the magazines. Will have to get myself down there.
