I like the bit in "Back in Black Boxes" that shows the 2 parts of the black box being labeled differently.
Apparently, Allied-Signal became AlliedSignal in 1993. It merged with Honeywell in December 1999. Flight 93 (N591UA) was delivered for use in 1996 (source)... also see this picture's details-- shot in 1996.

So notice the "H" for Honeywell on the cylindrical piece and the "a" in Signal on the other.
Is there a reasonable explanation for the labeling issue?

What they measure
The cockpit voice recorder is a rectangular device encased in durable metal that is placed in the tail section of every commercial airplane. Microphones in the cockpit pick up voices and other noises, which are recorded on a loop of tape that starts anew every 30 minutes.
The flight data recorder keeps a running record of several aspects of a plane's flight, including altitude, airspeed and the craft's direction and pitch, all correlated with time measurements.
So, which is which? The flight data recorder is one. The cockpit voice recorder is the other. The sources for the images above (Moussaoui trial exhibit P200065 and P200066) shows the FDR as the cylindrical one and the CVR as the rectangular. But the NTSB shows - or seems to show - the rectangular one as the FDR:

But, AlliedSignal is listed as the manufacturer of the FDR... and the label comes from Honeywell...
