I never before considered Not-Oddjob to be a Karnov, but I see some resemblance, in those Data East sprites. Besides, he looks way more like Karnov than Chelnov, who is officially a Karnov-cousin!

But to the point, all those Karnov-customs are just fantastic. I was trying to pick a favorite, and gave up!

Absolutely AWESOME work on the arcade background, too. I can’t believe it’s possible to get that level of detail, using only pixels! Well done!

I can spot all the coin-ops, except the far-left and right ones. [In order, L-R: ?(Far Left)?, Shadow Dancer, Final Fight, TMNT, Golden Axe, Strider, ?(It looks kinda like Double Dragon II, but I’m not sure)?]

He puts what they are on the front page post, but I'll clarify since development company doesn't necessarily give game title away:

Good characters, left to right:
Jessica Haggar (Final Fight), Irene Lew and Ryu Hayabusa (NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy), Joe Musashi (Revenge of Shinobi/Shinobi III), Raphael (TMNT), Gilius Thunderhead (Golden Axe series), Yamato (Shadow Dancer)

Villains, left to right:
Neo-Zeed Leader (Revenge of Shinobi), Crash Man (Mega Man), Damnd (Final Fight), Queen of the Oasis (Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle), Strobaya (Strider), Karnov in Sly Spy boss outfit, StrongWoman (S.P.Y.: Special Project Y)

Now that I've written that out, where does Karnov lie? I know he's been a boss character in some games, but he started out as the protagonist of his own.

Eddie: Thanks! The toughest part of spriting this arcade was trying to find size comparison reference for the original cabs. TMNT's cabinet usually led to it being put in a unique position instead of being right next to the more normal machines. The other games had a problem I hadn't realized before. The flyers' didn't have pics of it, and most of the pics looked like conversion kits. Even the manuals I found were conversion instructions. I just went with the cabs that looked the most common. I put that unidentified game, Taito's Crime City, in an old, standard Taito cabinet I'd used earlier for Jungle Hunt because CC was easy to make, saved time and added a company that wasn't already in the mix. The DD2 idea was a great call, because DD1 looks like it was in those same Taito cabinets!

Brawl: can any of us truly describe Karnov? I specifically put the Sly Spy boss sprite there partially because I'm not sure if he's truly Karnov there. There are Karnov posters in the game and the boss never spits fire. My theory (and I have one because I planned to write an article about it) is that Karnov is just chasing treasure and his side in any situation is whatever will get him that treasure. I'm not sure how to explain what he's up to in Trio the Punch, but that can be applied to the rest of the game as well.

Last update of the theme!

Site blog news post link

The Mad Gear gang is now fully represented as sprites as of this update, now that there's a wheelchair Belger to go with the standing sprite from October.

How's that for irony? Shadow Dancer(Genesis) is the game I'd been playing lately, and that was the only character I couldn't recognize. Wonder if the saw blades would have helped...

Don't forget that the Genesis/Mega Drive version of Shadow Dancer is almost a completely different game than the arcade version, though some of the enemies (Asian Dawn in the arcade, Union Lizard on the Genesis) have similarities. The boss in the arcade game actually yanked slabs of metal out of the background and flung them at you, then protected herself with some sort of psi-shield. The odd thing is that I saw pics (that I can't find now) of the Japanese Mega Drive manual and the art they drew for her made her look like a bit like a cross between both the arcade and Mega Drive female bosses.

It's funny that you posted that, because one of the things I have to do tomorrow is put a pic together for V-Alis with Shadow Dancer boss and the Strider amazons for a belated birthday present :)

Those pics remind me of Urusei Yatsura:
*group of guys jump on girl, get sent flying by said girl, and shout "Blue Impulse"*

Guess I do need to get to the arcade games(SD and the original Shinobi) some time soon.

If it looks like the picture you whipped up for my birthday, it's going to be awesome. :D
