@Prime: I checked out your suggestions. GeoStorm quite looked like the direct predecessor of Metal Slug. I might have seen Chack'N Pop but I barely remember it. seeing both characters from the Bobble series make their debut her took me by surprise.

@Brawl: Burning Fight's flaws lie on the sluggish controls and those pesky fatsos. Their sumo hand-thrust outmatch your punching range and they tend to repeat it every time you are getting up, over and over until all your health is all gone.

Sengoku 2 plays much better since you have increased range, nicer backgrounds, and it doesn't pad out as long as the first game.

As monotonous as Konami's licensed BEUs are, they were rather consistent with the controls. Attack, Jump, and a Special button. And I also liked that the throws (albeit random) instantly kill the target and those in close proximity as great crowd control. The main frustration is friendly fire, be it normal attacks or thrown enemies.

Yeah, I'm not that great at observing and articulating the aspects of games I like/dislike, but with Burning Fight, the thing that stood out to me is, if you're going to clone another beat 'em up, at least take the bare minimum of what that other beat 'em up has already established for gameplay. It didn't even have half the move set, which I imagine might have been able to counterbalance some of the AI flaws, as players would have more ways to strategize a way around them.

The only Sengoku I've played was number 3, which I quite enjoyed. But I still remember seeing number 1 for the first time (back in the day), and thinking it looked pretty cool.

It's AWESOME that you've done grunts pages for these, so Kudos for that!

Hello! I'm releasing the update a tad early since I have extras in line for Halloween. Following the tradition of spooky monsters, shrines for LASER GHOST, NIGHT SLASHERS, KIKI KAIKAI (Mysterious Ghost World), and NIGHTMARE IN THE DARK are now live. >8E

Hi guys, how are things?

:heyUguyz!!:

Man, I can't believe it's been 2 years since I posted here, right around the near-Halloween too. I have been using the AQM Tumblr lately with regards to site post updates as well as some random reblogs and shit posting. ^U^

I've been mostly covering fighting games this 2017, with some of the most well-known titles featured during the first half of the year, with the more obscure ones spread for this yearender half. Random light-gun games/sidescrollers were also spread throughout each update.

For November, I'm featuring Data East's Real Ghostbusters (aptly for this period), plus the ghost-obscure titles like Schmeiser Robo (Germanic codenames + Valkyrie to celebrate a certain movie), Dragon Master and Irem's Superior Soldiers.

As the site nears its 10th year, it'll be going back to its roots to feature the sidescrolling genre the shrines have started from.

:ffgo: AQM November update!

Till then. :kenyayfin:

I apologize if there are fans of those games, but I admit have a softer spot toward Robo Army and Mutation Nation. At least SNK's platformers and fighting games are more memorable.

Which also reminds me that I need to work on the rest of Metal Slug and possibly start on the Bubble Bobble & Puzzle Bubble series. :D
Somehow I still can't believe that all the games I have rambled on in this post have already been featured in the site. >8E

Other than some PC issues, I have no idea how I missed these last couple posts.

I checked the site out, was scratching my head at how there was more than Superman for a DC section. Not sure I'd see that particular Batman game as a beat 'em up myself, but then I remembered that there is another arcade Batman game that definitely is...

...and I gotta say, don't be afraid to try this version of Batman Forever, which was ported to both 32-bit disc consoles, and PC's(actually, both were ported to PC's). This version is alright, and not at all like the 16-bit console/8-bit handheld version. (you'll need the Saturn BIOS[stv, or whatever it's called] for M.A.M.E.)

I agree that Atari's Batman arcade is less beat-em-up and more platforming, though that's the tad tricky part when putting together a couple games with different genre mechanics under one header (Three Wonders, the wrestling KOTM and beatemup KOTM2). Besides, the Superman game is also beat em up and horizontal shooter.

And you're right about the actual beat em up version of Batman. I'd admit this might be the very first time I saw/heard of it, let alone the video footages are more about the console versions. Being Acclaim, the MK3 style presentation is not a surprise. Most of the arcade Batman versions will either be the Tim Burton movie or the recent driving game.
