I won't have time to make a huge update but I'll still try to make it special.

You knew that was coming, right?

Oh, heck yeah.

I don't suppose we'll see any barbarians in blue speedos?

That's the plan but he and his minilogo aren't done yet so I can't guarantee it. I'm a bit worn out from the last 3 theme months on Illmosis and ScrollBoss so it won't be as big as I want it to be. There will be a few 1989-based surprises for Vs. Maker and the Custom Sprite sections just like the Halloween update. Some additions are things that I already have sprite edits of and a few will be new sprites and edits. I have 3 more unseen edits already finished and I'll try to bump that up a bit more.

One thing that I just finished working on was adding some functions and data that add small sprite galleries in the S-File character profiles. I'll post more previews as I get all of this together.

A 1989 anniversary feature? I want in

Please accept my humble old tribute as a contribution for the update or any Gameboy themed sections

I'll be proud to add that to the 1989 article when talking about how the revolutionary the GameBoy was.

Hell, if anyone wants to kick in their two cents about how 1989's gaming made or makes them feel, I'd put that in the article if you want me to.

edit: Eddie, I just finished Ax and his minilogo along with another Sega minilogo that will be used in the Vs. Maker. I'm working on their data files right now. Nothing mind-blowing but it's nice to have the GA trio in fighter-sized form.

edit 2: One more Vs. Maker preview. A new sprite for a character I've made multiple edits of but he's also getting a SFA3 edit portrait:

Agreed. Looking forward to seeing those, already.

If you're looking for a 1989-themed banner, I posted one in the 1989 topic, in the Gamage section. Nothing fancy, but it represents a lot of what I loved about that year, in gaming.

Once again, the banner is very much appreciated and filled with 1989 goodness :D

BTW: there are no new characters in this shot, but...

The new character expansion is testing well so far but I'm not sure if this screenstyle will be in the 1989 update.

So... I was cleaning my room and I found my old SUPER TURRICAN cart.

Amazing game, amazing OST.
I haven't played the first couple of games nor Mega Turrican, but turns out the franchise debuted in 1989.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turrican
Turrican is a 1989 video game programmed and designed by Manfred Trenz. It was first developed for the Commodore 64 by Rainbow Arts, but was ported to other systems later. In addition to concept design and character creation, Trenz personally programmed Turrican on the Commodore 64. A sequel, Turrican II, followed 1991 for the Commodore 64 and other platforms.

MotherfFFFFF! I don't even know how Turrican didn't make it on to the main list I have. I think the big video game list I checked out may have been console-only so I'll have to hunt down one for computer games too. Shin, Many, many thanks for letting me know about that because it more than deserves a mention.

edit: After reading a bit more, it says that the game was really released in 1990 BUT the demo itself sounds significant enough to deserve a mention.

Yeah, the wiki article was kind of confusing.
It deserves a special mention if the demo was released in 89? Fair enough.

Oh and sort of related to the good ol' 89;

I might just throw this out there as an update for Friday but here's a mostly finished version version of the 1989 introduction page:

1989 main page

It links to the VERY UNFINISHED 1989 beat-em-up page that still needs a lot of refining. I might save that one for later. The Turrican demo will be mentioned in the 1989 platformers article along with other obvious games.

The Vs. Maker update will either hit next week or the week after that. The current count is 8 added characters including someone that I just finished working on Tues. Night. There should be a lot more finished by the time it's updated.

edit (2009-12-17) - Uploaded a better version of the main 1989 page and BEU page along with an unfinished version of the game list. The BEU page is about 80% done now.

1989: The Year Rob's Life was Completely Changed.

A lot happened to me that year, a lot of which I chronicled in MoaVC. My first NES and being introduced to the Genesis were only small parts of it. In fact, I'll be celebrating a certain 20 year anniversary New Year's Eve Day.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of this series, Prime. ^_^

Thanks, Dire!

The new update is ready and includes better versions of the 1989 main page, the beat-em-up page, 3 new 1989 games to the Game Index and Alex Kidd gets his own page with new sprite additions including this MF'er:

If you've ever played Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, you probably hate that guy. He's even more annoying than Medusa Heads!

Custom sprites, Mini Logos and Vs. Maker and maybe more things will hit next week. Here are the least exciting (so far) new minilogos that will be in next week's udpate:

Oh yeah. HIM. What was it I used to call him? Something along the lines of "that motherf***ing piece of shit teleporting a**hole old bast**d."

Suffice to say, I can't stand that old jerk.

I always forget to put him in that unholy group of annoying enemies. You know, the Medusa Heads, all flying animals in Ninja Gaiden, the thieves in Kid Icarus, etc. That old teleporting bastard has to be in the top ten if I wrote a list.

There's a ton of things that I wanted to have in the update but couldn't do the right way. The "Genesis/TG16/Gameboy" article, the platformer article, an article about the SMB/Zelda/Capt. N cartoons (yes, they all came out in 1989!) and more. I wanted to add more games to the Game Index and more characters to the Vs Maker. There'll be more 1989 updates in 2010 but there will also be one last surprise update this week. All I'm going to say is that two characters who should've been in that Sunday update will hit the Vs. Maker this update and one will be hitting it with the same lead pipe he's carrying in the game's cover art :ibukishifty:
