When did you start buying stuff for your baby?

When did you start buying stuff for your baby?

I hope you all don't mind me posting about a much less serious issue than the very important conversation happening below, but I finally have a weekend free and I've been thinking about this for a while...

I will be 14wks pg tomorrow, so officially out of the 1st trimester! So nuts. I still can't believe it. I have been struggling with when to start buying things for the little guy/gal, in part b/c I still really can't believe it, but I also don't know when is the "right" time (I'm sure there isn't really a "right" answer here, but looking for your experience as a guide!). We bought one little Gap night outfit (I think it's a night outfit- it's shocking how little I know about this stuff- but it's cute! ) and we're planning on buying most stuff secondhand, so it will take some time to find everything I want/need. But I don't want to start too early... We have a prelim gender prediction, but frankly I'm not a huge pink or blue person, so that's not too big a deal.

What did you guys do? Thanks in advance and hope everyone is well!

Ds came 6 wk early and we had NOTHING. My baby shower was scheduled for the followig weekend. We had no crib, no car seat, no blankets, no bottles. Nada. It's a good thing he spent 10 days in the NICU because it gave us time to get everything together.

I'd just say start registering whenever you want. It will help the shopping urge without filling up your home too much.

We started already, just because we are going to be buying most of it ourselves and thought it's best to start now, since there's alot to get.
I made a mock registry to help me feel more organized about what we need and I've been buying things on sale as I see them. Signed up for coupons for BuyBuyBaby and BabiesRUs and am watching sales as they happen and hitting them up. Once we find out the sex, I plan on grabbing up summer clearance stuff for next summer, I've seen some great end of season sales. And...since I'm home alot, I started entering online contests. I won a whole bunch of things a few weeks ago, including a Mamaroo, which retails for $239, pretty cool (hope the baby thinks so, lol)!
I really want to get the bigger things (crib, car seat, stroller, etc) all done by the end of October because once November hits, the stores start getting crowded for holiday shopping and I'll not want to be in them. The smaller things I can order online.

...that you won a Mamaroo!!! That is my #1 desired item! My friend has one and her baby loves it. What a great idea to enter contests. Like you, I'm home a lot and don't have a ton of people to buy stuff for us (and have about $0 for this endeavor...). Do you mind sharing where/how you find contests to enter? Very exciting! I joined my local mom's group and they have a classified section where people sell used items for very discounted prices or give them away. I haven't jumped on anything, in part b/c I'm not sure if it's too early, and maybe in part b/c part of me really wishes we could give our baby new stuff. In any case, I love your creativity here and will try to follow in your footsteps! Thanks for sharing!

Despite my disdain of CL, it is a great place to find clothes and other gear. However, be aware of stuff labeled "new in box". In my personal experience it's likely stolen off of someone's porch. Many baby outfits are not worn many times so they can come in good shape for cheap. Just don't buy car seats used. You should always buy them new from the mf, so you can register your item with the company to get updates in case of recalls. (nobody told me this until I had already picked up a used one...oopsie)

I totally get it. Finances are tough here too. Without my salary we are really feeling the hit, and these baby things ADD UP, my goodness!!! I'm trying to do 1 big thing each month and the smaller things as I see them on sale, so I'm not "so" overwhelmed. I was nervous to start buying as well.

Anything I see that I want in a store, I write down the name, model and make and go home first and see if I can find it online cheaper. There have been several things that I have found cheaper online vs the store (ie: a cradle I fell in love with at BBB was 50 bucks cheaper online, though I didn't buy that yet) I'm finding it pays to research before purchasing.

Contests: If you google online sweepstakes or online contests, you will find TONS of links that will direct you to various contests for baby things. This is what I do and sometimes I spend hours entering sweepstakes. I enter evreything not just baby things, because if you win something, you can always sell it and there is some money for baby stuff

The coupons help alot too and when you sign up, they'll send you emails notifying you of sales.

A few weeks ago, StrollerTraffic.com was giving away a SICK amount of baby things, the Bugaboo(which I really, REALLY want), car seat, about 5K worth, but unfortunately I didn't win that one, but maybe they'll run another one soon

Target has lots of good sales too and if you sign up for a Red Card (its not a credit card, just a card that's linked to your debit) when you pay, you automatically save 5% every time. It all adds up.

If you order anything online, always google "Promo Code for _____" You will be surprised how much %
you can save adding that code at checkout. Old Navy often has them, Gap, etc.

I plan on looking at Craigs List too, for gently used things.

I had a friend look over my mock registry and she was able to give me alot of tips on things we could probably "pass" on.

I have heard mixed reviews about the Mamaroo, so hopefully the kid will dig it ;0)

One last thing, I'm not a member of the Bump (I don't post there) but I go and read some of the boards and alot of times, someone will shout out freebies or sales, it helps!

If I think of anything else, I will post!

Once I could actually believe it I started buying things! I bought one little outfit almost as soon as my bfp just to say to myself "this baby is coming!". I had an amnio (16w)and then I really went crazy with buying baby things.I had an amazon wish list and a babies r us registry which was a really good way to organize and just figure out what I needed. I didn't share it with other people until closer to 6 months it was just for me at first.

I am not superstitious, but boy is it hard to buy when you think you are going to jinx it all!
BUT it is not true!! Go ahead an buy-
One piece of information that someone gave me when I posted a similar question was on the big stuff (cribs, changing tables, etc). At least begin to inquire early because furniture can have long lead times. They are big and not always in stock. So look those up, call and ask how long if they are not in stock it would take to order one.
Good luck!!!

Congrats, Teresa! Glad you got positive news on the testing for Down's. And, my word of caution title is not related to anything about testing, but rather about buying too far ahead on clothes for you LO. First off, every manufacturer sizes their clothes differently (some run true to size, a few run large, and many run way small!). Second, there is no way of knowing whether you LO will be average, small or large for his/her age, which significantly impacts how the manufacturer sizing will work for you LO. My DS was born in March and was a little larger than average at birth - 7 lbs 11 oz and 21 1/4 inches. He is now in the 95th percentile for height and is still average for weight. He is about to grow out of 6 mo clothing for most manufacturers and is already in 9 mo clothing for others - and he is just over 4 mos!

I did find that by the time it really started to get warm this Spring, many stores already had their summer clothing on sale. So, I was able to buy a little bit ahead for his summer clothing needs and return as needed! His growth has been a little more than I (and the ped) expected recently, so I am scrambling now to make sure he will have some hot weather things to carry him through September since I am not sure how much more he will grow between now and then. I dare not think about Fall clothing at the moment, as I have no idea where DS will be by then. I will likely get a few things in late Aug and wait for the Fall clothing to go on sale before buying a lot.

Congrats again! Also, you are smart to go ahead and buy baby infrastructure ahead of time. That stuff really takes a hit on your wallet and it is nice to have it done ahead of the holiday rush.

But I'm a nervous wreck and have had multiple m/c's, so at 25 weeks, I only got a few things b/c I was finally to viability so I thought I should start to get serious about decorating a baby room! And then once I started, it really snowballed, there is just SO much to do to get ready for a new baby! I had no idea! I wish I'd had more time to get even more organized (Lorelei came about 4 weeks early) but my Mom was with us the first week at home, so she helped a ton. And some stuff, you just don't even know you need until you actually have the babe at home finally.

I remember one of the ultrasound techs that knew me pretty well b/c of all of my m/c's said when I got to viability, I HAD to go out and buy something or I was going to miss out on the experience. It was kind of emotional and overwhelming when I first started shopping. I went out thinking maybe we could buy her bed set, but it was just too hard on me, so I ended up buying her a little outfit from Target. Start small and go from there, then you'll know what you're comfortable with. Just don't leave everything to the last minute b/c the end gets really uncomfortable and running around, shopping is not so fun.

Good Luck!
