Uggg! Mostly failed my first gestational diabetes test...

So I had my gestational diabetes one hour test two days ago. Everything else is great but I am in the "gray" zone for this test. They want below 135 and I was 155, which she said was not horrible but they need me to do the 3 hour test. I do that next Thursday.

I know it's not a bad number, I know, and I know lot of people need the three hour and pass it, but I'm not happy about it. I am so careful with my diet... though I have been craving sugar. I have been trying to keep it to fresh fruit but I'd be happy to eat a whole tub of frosting, THOUGH I HAVE NOT!

Now I am a bit worried since my Dr. did say that the baby was "big", but I did not question this part, but I know that can be an issue/indicator. Weight is not an issue with me and I have only gained 10 pounds so far. (But the Dr.s say that is fine since baby is a good size.)

So, though I know I just posted a question, I'd love to read any personal info on this, passing or failing, and what happens next...

Thank you all,
Sara H

I'm sorry you have to go through this. I passed mine with my first but had several friends who failed the one hr but then passed the 3 hr. I have a little bit of training with nutrition so I know that complex carbs like whole grains stay in your system for a while, so I would recommend really limiting your carbs and walking for 30 min each day a few days before the test so that you have very little hanging around when you start. Sorry I don't have better advice!

For my last 2 pgs. I'm thinnish and never gain more than 20 lbs total. Yet I seem to fail the 1 hr and pass the 3 hr. And FWIW there were two other tiny women at the hospital w/ me doing the test. Just genetics I guess (and maybe age, for me).

Hugs and gl!

They said my baby was measuring big all along (which was horribly inaccurate in my case). Her belly was measuring the biggest which is usually a sign on GD but I passed my test. So try not to worry until you have to hon. The "big baby" line doesn't always mean GD.

In regards to your baby measuring big...I had u/s every 2 weeks and they kept saying my baby was measuring at least 2 weeks ahead. At 33w they said she was 6lb 15oz...well, at 36w2d, I went in to labor and she was only 6lb 11oz....so don't count on those u/s too much! I was really surprised with how off those measurements were considering I had so many ye know???

Anyways, glad to see you're doing so great otherwise!!! Motherhood is hard, but wonderful and I so look forward to reading your birth story!

Thank you all,
Sara H
I don't have any experience with the 3 hour test, but want to wish you good luck. It seems like a lot of women don't pass the first one, but do pass the 3 hour one. Sorry you have to deal with it.

Laura gave good advice about trying to limit complex carbs a couple of days before. Good luck!

Hey you! A friend of mine had this same situation - she made sure to eat only protein the night before and the morning of. Maybe a little bit of sugar/carb. I was told my whole pg whoa this baby is huge. I did gain quite a bit during the last trimester after gaining very little the rest of the time. The baby was a fine size 6lb 11oz granted 3 weeks early!

Good luck passing the 2nd test!

I was told it was OK to have breakfast before the test but no sugar and so I had my daily bowl of whole grain Cheerios... which is a whole grain... I had no idea! Good to know!

Yes, I know what you mean about 'trying to pass' the test, on the other hand if something is off with my diet I'd like to know? I will be getting lots of exercise the days before since I'll be working like crazy but I don't know how much I can do about my diet... I'll have to be eating out... I'll have to play that by ear.

Good to know about baby sizes. One Dr said we were right on at 56% and the other says big... But with the cord issues I'd rather big. I just wanted to mention it as another thing of note.

OK, have to stop typing, DH is bugging me to read all your responses! I think he relies as much on this board now as I do!

Again, thanks to all, such good thoughts! You ladies are always such a help!

I had a number similar to yours for my 1 hour test. My OB had me do carbo loading before my 3 hour test and I passed it with flying colors. I didn't do anything special with my eating up until I did the carbo loading the day before or maybe 2 days before? Can't remember now. It was also the holidays and my baby shower in my hometown was right around that time, so I definitely had some sweets.

I will also pass along some anecdotal info on the size of your baby. My baby was always measuring on the bigger side (80 some odd percentile) throughout my pregnancy. I had an u/s the morning of his birth and they were estimating he would weigh 8 lbs 12 oz or so. He was 7 lbs 11 oz when born 6 hours later. But, his head circumference was in the 90 some odd percentile at birth and my husband's family is known to have large heads. I have concluded that they estimate weight based on head circumference, which is why they typically are off my a pound or so in either direction. If you or DH have larger heads, then I would be less concerned about size estimates.

if its any consoliation, I passed both of my gd tests, gained less than what the average was and still wound up having a large baby. Everyone was surprised how big he was after looking at me I wouldn't say the correleation is 1:1. I would just ask your mom and your dh's mom if there are any big babies in the family.
