I have been having a lot of BH contractions, tightening of the uterus. Not painful, over very quickly, makes me feel like I have to pee. But, about 7 today I have noticed, not regular at all, random.

I am not overly worried, have been drinking extra water (not enough yesterday I am sure) and JUST saw the Dr. yesterday, who did not do a pelvic but did not think anything was wrong, though I did not mention this as it just really came to my attention today. (Actually, she thinks the baby is big!) So, this is not a panic, just a inquiry/survey.

SO, if you don't mind sharing, what are your experiences with Braxton Hicks? When should I be worried? Web sites say one thing, personal experience is quite another!

Thanks Ladies!

I had such a hard time finding info about my first...I'm so happy you're asking.

Personally, as a mom of a preemie, I don't believe in the term "Braxton hicks" any more. I used to, and my OB at the time even said dont worry. Yet, 6 wk early I was 3cm dilated but not in pain, no bleeding and my water had not broken. 14 hrs later I was a NICU mom. So, I believe contractions are contractions. So, here's what you do when you feel one:

Start timing. You don't have to stop what you're doing, but maybe keep a stopwatch handy...most cell phones have one.

If you feel more than 4 in an hour, drink 2 full glasses of water and lie down on your left side. Do some deep breathing, maybe ask DH for a foot rub. Time again for another hour. If you have less than 4 in that hour, you're fine and you can stop timing.

If you feel more than 4 in that hour, go to L/D. Actually, eat a sandwich and then go, cuz once you get there they won't let you eat or drink. Tell them you already did the water test. They'll monitor you for another hour, and measure your cervix on u/s. they might give you a drug called nifedipine if you continue to have contractions. This should stop them if they haven't already stopped. Once they stop or become far enough apart, you will be released.

I only went through this routine once before delivering, but had I gone the first few times I really noticed long stretches of "B-H" I might have spared my son the NICU.

I had a bunch of BH with DS. I'm not good with drinking water usually, so I think that's part of it.

Apparently there's a physiological reason for the connection - the hormone that causes BH is produced in the same area of the body as the hormone that tells you to not pee because you don't have enough water in your system.

Especially with the weather getting warmer, I'd work on upping your water intake.

How far along are you? I had them with both my pregnancies starting around 18 weeks and carried both babies to 38+weeks. I found if I could lay down and drink fluids they would disappear. I would also get them if I didn't pee regularly. I would be concerned in they are frequent and painful, do not subside with drinking and rest or if you having any bleeding or pressure in your pelvis.

GREAT ADVICE! I will take all of it!

Today I have not yet felt one so I am guessing the water thing was it. Will be more careful!

I will totally time them, thank you. I had been looking at the clock to make sure they were not regular, which they were not, but there were a bunch in the evening.

So glad I asked, so glad you answered!
Thanks!

for two pregnancies and carried both full term. I think it depends a lot on your cervix, if you don't have cervix problems it's probably nothing to worry about. So maybe at your next appt you could get a cervix check, or before then if you continue to have them. I think I just didn't know enough to worry about it. Definitely better to be on the safe side. For dd#2 I went in to be induced and the nurse said, oh you're having contractions, I was surprised because I thought they were just BH.

Since I went in to labor at 36w with real contractions,...those pains were totally different. BH contractions were localized, I could point to where the pain was and it felt like a tightening ball or something.

With my contractions, they were deep inside and I couldn't pinpoint where they were coming from at all. And my contractions were bowel related too...felt like I needed to poop but couldn't. And even if I did poop, I felt no relief. Then I had some bleeding too, so that sealed the deal for me!

Hope this helps.

If you are good with the water - the other thing to watch for is over doing it. You may not be one of those people who can "work out" or even walk into their 3rd tri. I could not. Walking even gave me BH so I just took it easy. It's your body's way of saying slow down!

ps I've posted this before regarding the way the tummy feels - this was from my nurse practioner:

Tummy feels like tip of nose - regular
Tummy feels like tip of chin - BH (slightly tight)
Tummy feels like forehead - contractions

In my experience, contractions will literally take your breath away.
