On May 7, 2007, 52 year old Darreld Rayner of Lake Cowichan went missing while walking his dog. Mr Rayner was last seen
at approximately 8:30 AM walking along Fairservice Main logging road, approximately 3 kilometers from his home. He was
very familiar with the area, hikes often and is not known to have any health issues prior to his departure from his home.
An extensive search was conducted that afternoon by RCMP and local Search and Rescue crews, with the assistance of family
and volunteers. Mr Rayner's dog, a Jack Russell Terrier, was found that night by searchers, as was a coffee cup belonging
to Mr. Rayner. The intensive search covered every square meter of the area, and included the use of tracking dogs and
helicopters. The search went on for several days, and over 3400 search hours were expended. After the official search ended,
the family and other volunteers continued to search for Mr. Rayner in the area south of Lake Cowichan for several more months,
never giving up hope Rayner would be found. Police are hopeful appeals to the public will lead to new information which will
answer the questions about what happened to Mr. Rayner on that day in May of 2007.

The BC Coroners Service says remains found in Lake Cowichan late last year are those of a hiker who went missing more than a decade ago.

The remains found on Dec. 22, 2017 have been identified as Darreld Stanley Rayner, a Lake Cowichan resident who was last seen walking his dog along a logging road in May 2007.

Rayner's dog and coffee cup were later discovered by search and rescue crews, but his body was never found in the months-long search.

The remains were found near South Shore Road in a "steep and secluded" area that required a coordinated effort from search and rescue members and RCMP.

DNA testing has since confirmed the remains are Rayner's.

Rayner, an outdoor enthusiast who family said knew the area very well, was 52 years old at the time he went missing.

The BC Coroners Service said an investigation is ongoing.
