hi everyone - first time posting here.

just picked up a Pam 197 - my first panerai which also happens to be the first manual wind watch i have ever owned.

I am rather surprised at how tense the winder feels as I turn. There is decent amount of resistance as I wind, and if I ease the grip the winder spins back on its own running down most of the power. Is this normal or did I buy a damaged watch?

Just got the watch in mail today. Will post some pics later.

I have a Pam 190 and it has the same movement as your 197. Mine winds rather smoothly and is one of my benchmarks when it comes to how good it feels when winding. It should also not spin back when you let go of the crown while winding. Also, I do not suggest winding it past the 8 day PR indicator.

Looking forward to seeing some pics of the Pam.

stopped at shreve & co today who told me i should send the watch into panerai for a service (would probably take 12 weeks and roughly 7-800 bucks)

they then recommended I check w Gears and Jewels here in SF. I am supposed to get estimate by tomorrow night. hope it's no big deal
