The 422 is a nice looking watch but doesn't really make sense to me. It's made with vintage styling but lacks the traditional vintage design which is the 9 next to the subdial and the use of the word "marina". I mean why make a new vintage case in 47mm, engraved dial, ecru lume, domed crystal I mean really going the distance to make this look 'vintage' and then leave off the main aesthetics....

I'm hoping its because they will release one with an 8-Day movement in the future, then it will make sense, but until then....

Anyway not matter what my gripes are with the 422, it's still a nice watch but the 372 would win no matter what for me because I love bases!

I prefer that over the 372 anytime anyday, of course, must have sapphire to complete the modern version of a vintage.

I do think that the 372 is beautiful but when the hands are both in the top half of the dial it looks unbalanced to me; both hands in the bottom half; perfect! Font on the 'Luminor Panerai' is also a tad too thick for me - in fact, as I think of it I wonder if that's the main problem for me - thinner text may not over balance it. The 422 looks more balanced principally due to the extra wording and the smaller font.

I'm not particularly interested in maintaining early 'DNA' traits that I know is held so dear by many on here - I'm up for the 'Darwinian' approach - by all means swap a plexiglas for crystal to make it a little more robust, add the power reserve indicator on the back as it's a nice touch and why - because things evolve and I'm ok with that.

To me, if you put a 372 next to a 422 I've got a tough choice but simply put the 422 just looks that little bit better.

Sorry if this may offend anyone.

I get to know Panerai not because of its history but its beautiful design.
And I buy Panerai not because of its history but because I love the design.

Personally I don't really care whether it is resembling the vintage or not.
Most importantly, it must looks good as a watch to me.

Base on this, I feel Pam 422 looks more balanced, better and more valuable.

Just my personal opinion.

I love the blend of "vintage" & modern tech....
The 372 is an awesome watch, but unlike many member here I can only really afford 1 & it's the 422 for me.....and am still saving for it like crazy! Every cent goes towards my "422 -FUND" LOL

It would have a the new all polished case, engraved black dial, and I doubt they'd use 8 giorni(that's be a treat though) but you're correct I just don't see them putting plexi on watch with an 8 days p2002 movement on board. I personally don't care about the plexi, i'd be just as happy with a sapphire crystal on my 372, its not like the plexi is super domed or anything. I've got my fingers crossed

If you have to choose one......and why?
I prefer the 422 because of the durability of the sapphire, rear power reserve indicator, he seconds hand and extra text on the dial. While the purity of the 372 is spot-on, I find the 422 just as classic, but more interesting. Also, to me the seconds hand matches the case and dial size better. When I wear the 372, I often feel as if it needs something more, which the 422 really has.

I can't believe I feel this way, but...

I find that I prefer the 422 over the 372.

I sincerely hope my Paneristi card is not revoked.

Honestly - I LOVE the 372 and everything about it sings to me - but I find that I am much more drawn to the 422.

I'm glad I don't have to make it a one-or-the-other decision.

Cheers...

Michael

IMO, 422 face is too crowded. In my eyes the 372 is a vintage recreation done very well. The 422 is the next iteration but it has no precedent. Don't get me wrong, the 422 is a very nice watch, they both are. But the 372 has the edge in 'DNA'.
