Hi guys,

I'm in the market for my first luxury watch and seeking some advice. I never had a nice watch but always loved nice watches and since I'm getting married this Sept I figured this will be the perfect time to buy a nice watch. I have always loved Panerai since I first saw one 4 years ago (Pam 112) but after looking at few different watches I'm little confused. Should I buy a Pam or should I buy a IWC. For Panerai I was looking at Pam 000, Pam 233, Pam 268, Pam 312 and for IWC I was thinking about Portguese Auto or Big pilot. I wear shirt and tie to work everyday but I don't wear suit to work at least not right now. My budget is 10k (5k from the awesome wife and 5k from myself).I would prefer in house movement, date function and automatic. Any idea on which watch I should get? And what is the best way to buy a watch? AD or can I trust a gray dealer?

Thank You

if you want the less expensive option you can go with the 000 base, manual wind, no date. the others will run you a bit more than the 10k you've alotted. good luck with your hunt.

The 312 is a classic beauty offering all the qualities of a modern Luminor. It will be a perfect first PAM to you.
But be prepared to get the bug! Only one will soon become not enough...

I love the 000 (it's the one I'm saving for) so I am biased, but I think you should spend $5k for the 000 and spend the other $5k on another piece (maybe a dress watch or another universal watch like a SMP or Submariner)

If you have 10K and plan to spend the whole budget, I would look for a used 268 and used 000. You will get the best of both luminor and rad worlds. I own at 233 and although it's a lovely watch, it's a bit large for a dress up situation. You could wear the 268 during the week and the 000 on the weekends. The 268 still has the in-house 8 day, so you get the same movement as the 233 for about 2K less. And, I love the BP, but 46mm on an aviator strap, does not really work for 5 days a week. I used to own one, I know. The Portu is nice too, but it's a bit plain when compared with a Panerai. Good luck!!

Just make sure to try both on with a long sleeve shirt. I loooove my Panerai (PAM 104), but find that it does not fit comfortably under my shirt cuff and I really have to force it in there, which then causes me to worry about scratching it on the shirt cuff. For these reasons, whenever I wear a long sleeve shirt or suit, I ditch the Panerai altogether and wear something else.

That's just me, though, and plenty of people here likely have no issues at all. But again, just try it on to make sure you're good.

If I could only have one watch within that price range, I'd get the Rolex Submariner ceramic. A bit "boring," but it's classic, durable (especially with the ceramic bezel), and versatile.

No need in-house, no need date function, no need automatic!
There's only two thing you need, EVERLASTING design and DNA!
And pam 390 is not that expensive, there are some in the 6k range.
Looks good in a suit too.
Pics speaks for itself!

Hope you get what you wanted.
And this is just my honest opinion.
Cheers mate.

If you had the funds. and sounds like you do - 10k. a little more and you could get yourself the pam of the century - IMHO - Pam 372
Everything one would need in a pam. 47mm. sandwich dial, manual wind, 72hour power reserve, in house movement, engraved dial.
A classic.

I've got a 352 and the titanium bracelet is quite scuffed after only 18 months. It's even worse than one might expect as I have double cuff shirts and my cufflinks tend to be metal.

I've bought some leather straps for during the week as they don't seem quite so delicate in this respect - it also gives the 352 a bit more of an office look as well. I now save the titanium bracelet for the weekend. Just need to get the scratches polished out of the bracelet - are those cloths you can buy on eBay any good?

it meets all your requirements (auto/date/inhouse) and is a bit dressier than 312 which i prefer.

no matter what you ask for these days, someone will jump in as say 372 (or 390) because that is what 'they' want and based on your requirements is def not the watch for your. incase you are wondering, 372 is 47mm(too big for many), manual (most first time buyers won't want this) and not date or seconds. these are appealing factors for many but not all.

Thanks guy for all of your ideas and opinions. This saturday I'm going to check out few watches and hopefully I can decide on a watch. I was also thinking about getting a 000 as my first watch first then save up more money and buy a another watch down the road. Thank you all for the input and hopefully I can become part of the community!

purchase from the Dealer's Market here within this forum. I purchased my first pam from an AD, but I traded it with a dealer in the Dealer's Market. I saved so much money. I had never done anything like this before, and it took me one year to move forward with the deal, because I was afraid I loose out at the end. I took the advice of those who used this one particular dealer, called him numerous times, and sought a reference check of him. I also had a friend who lived in Manhattan pop in his store to make sure he was legit. I also had him take photos of the store to send to me. After I saw the photos, i knew I was safe to go forward.

These were the steps I took to make me feel confident with the sale. Good Luck.
