#05 : Pam 127 vs Pam 372

SIHH 2002 BAAAM ! Here is the Pam 127, first Luminor ( *1 ) with a diameter of 47mm in the collection, and first 1950's style case. The mother of a long descent of special and current editions in various diameters ( even if the 47mm stay the original ).

SIHH 2011 BAAAM ! Here is the Pam 372, the long waited Luminor base. Surprise, it is also called 1950 but takes no other design or enclosures know by that name exept the REG.T.M ( *2 ) engraved protecting crown, it should be the mother of a new line and have numerous descendants also

The Pam 127 and 372 are all two inspired by some vintage models.
Both are precursors of a new housing design, with a gap of almost ten years. Old school become new school for the second time.

Views of the dials :

Marina ( *3 ) it is even if it is not written on the sub seconds dial show it ...

vs

Base ( *3 )

Golden hands

and

Double pencil hands in a more pink gold color

The numbers on the 127's dial are near to the edges

vs

They are more centered on the 372

L swiss made L

vs

L swiss L

The Pam 127 is one 1950, no doubts it is written on

Small painted writing.

The vintage font is engraved and big on the Pam 372's dial.

Together :

With the traditional Luminova and its painted writing on the dial the Pam 127 seems more contrasted, the dial looks more black than the one in the Pam 372.
Faux patina, matching hands and writing, no distortion because of the plexyglass and all that in a full polished case the Pam 372 looks some times to like a red moon.

Views of the cases :

Pam 127 :

The new, in 2002, design with the sides like a cradle, the highly polished bezel contrast with the brushed case.

Pam 372:

From the side the 372 looks like a fusion between one Luminor and a Radiomir with edges and rounded.

Lugs are thinner and flatter on the 372

Between the lugs we can see on the Pam 372

The OP ( * 4 ) number at 6

The PAM ( * 5 ) reference at 12

One domed crystal on the Pam 127.

The Pam 372 opts for a plexyglass like a tube.

Together :

1950 case and new 1950 case, the difference are huge ! Not only a difference of brushed versus polished. No one part of the design are similar.

Views of the crown guards :

Pam 127

The lever is down to up

vs

Pam 372

The opening is conventional : up to down, it remains brushed.

The 372's crown guard had to be redesigned to fit the edge of the side.

The movements :

Pam 127
Movement: hand-wound mechanical, Panerai OP XI calibre with swan's neck regulator, 16½ lignes, 17 jewels, PANERAI bridges. Glucydur® balance with Nivarox® I, spring, 21,600 alternations/hour. Incabloc® anti-shock device.
Power reserve 56 hours. Chronometer Certificate (C.O.S.C.).

Functions: hours, minutes, seconds.

The first OP XI decoration with panerai panerai panerai on the plates

Pam 372
Movement : hand-wound mechanical, Panerai P.3000 calibre, executed entirely by Panerai, 16½ lignes, 5.3 mm thick, 21 jewels, Glucydur® balance, 21,600 alternations/hour. Incabloc® anti-shock device. Power reserve 3 days, two barrels. 160 components.
Functions : hours, minutes.

With a very thin screw used for the see trough back some informations have to be included on the lugs, water reststance at 5 hours and the BB number at 7 hours.

Some personal comments:

Both with a diameter of 47mm the Pam 372 wears smaller.

The fiddy is a SE but produced in a large quantity, 1950 + 12 OOR when the Pam 372 is in the current editions catalog ( 3500 pieces for the only N series ).

Born as a tool watch the Pam 127 becomes almost precious since the arrival of the Pam 372.
The Pam 372 even if it have one polished case is a watch to use and more : to abuse ! It should look better with the time and the scares of life because with its plexyglass and full polished cans nothing was made to let it stay one safe queen.

There is no competition between them, they do not play the same song sheet, they complement each other as witnesses of an important part of the Panerai contemporary history.

Mother vs Mother ??

Thanks for watching

*1 :LUMINOR :
The name has been patented in 1949. The name Luminor comes from the luminous substance based on tritium which replaced the previous radiomium.
Now, Luminor is know as a case style ... a Luminor must have a crown-guard.

*3 : MARINA :
They are panerai watches with a Luminor case, they are called marina when they have a small seconds function, without the seconds hands, the Luminor watches are called Base.

Great comparison. Makes me want a 127 again. Thought I'd got it out of my system by buying a 372.....

The actual crown appears to be considerably smaller on the 127!

Views of the dials :

vs

Double pencil hands in a more pink gold color

The numbers on the 127's dial are near to the edges

They are more centered on the 372

The vintage font is engraved and big on the Pam 372's dial.

Faux patina, matching hands and writing, no distortion because of the plexyglass and all that in a full polished case the Pam 372 looks some times to like a red moon.
