The 587 is a classic with out trying to be anything else.
The 687 is a copy of something else.

I'm new to Panerai, so don't hesitate to discount my opinion! To my eye, the 587 is simple, classic, and understated ... if that's possible on a 47mm watch! Plus, there's something about those two words, 'Marina Militare'

The 687 is certainly more eye-catching, with its 'sunburst' dial and striking bezel. For me, the 587 is striking enough with its large and rugged, yet refined, look.

Let us know what you decide!

Interesting perspective, although I think the 687 is more of a tribute , since the original was made by Panerai also.
By your rationale the Omega Speedmaster is a copy of the original , the Rolex Submariner is a copy....and on and on.
If a different brand recreated it, I would agree....but the old watch was a Panerai and the new one is as well... No copy.
Just offering my differing view.

I personally like the 587. In my eyes I feel like the 687 is trying to recreate something very unique and special. In Porsche terms, I think the 587 is the 991.2 GT3 with a manual transmission while the 687 would be a 997.2 GT3 with manual transmission, body stripes, houndstooth seats and rear wing delete. BTW, I ended up selling my 997.1 GT3 for a 991.1 GT3. Hope all is well Howard! I figured Porsche comparisons would be good for you! Hiro

I'm thinking that the 587 is most akin to my 997.2 GT3. I'll take them both out for a sunny day spin some day soon and get back to you - thx Hiro!

587 all the way as the 687 is historically not a Panerai build.

I used to own a PAM356, but quickly tired of the faux patina numbers and markers and swapped it for a PAM89.
With that in mind, I'm afraid a whole dial-full of faux patina just doesn't attract me at all.
IMHO PAM587 is a classic example of the KISS principle.

I have often struggled with faux patina and your guidance here is very insightful. Thx Rapers!

Why, because I have one

The 587 is my daily beater, and it goes under the radar, with it's simple dial but at the same time totally "bad-a.."
And second, I'm not a fan of the writing on the bezel, I know it was made on a proto-type, but maybe there is a reason it never went further than that.
To me it is like "RolexRolexRolex" on the inside of the dial, taken a bit to far..
Just my 2 cents

the 687 is a bit too much IMO. that engraved bezel and the striking dial is exciting but a bit too much. If I have both, I think I'll wear the 587 most of the time.

I would go for the 587 with the simple black MM dial.

687 is nice but I think the tropical dial hype will fade off in time.

If you have some pieces, then the 687 will give you a nice twist.
Otherwise the 587 represents the values of the brand better.
