had a nutting stone, it broke. sooo in search of somethin to use to open these black walnuts i gathered this past year i decided to try a bearing block i pecked out of river stone and a hammer stone i use for knapping. thing is, theres all those little areas inside black walnuts where its hard to get the nut meats out of, soooo i had a bone. and some sand stone. made a pick. been enjoying black walnuts for a few days now :) works like a charm.

I can't eat walnuts because of a thyroid condition but used to like them.
I still have a few husks to make stain.

Determination, I say.  Well done.  If you found that in an archaeological dig with walnut shell, 
would we recognize it for what it is?
Hope you had a good feed.
Black walnuts = much taste change if/when roasted?

i made squash bread, mostly zucchini and yellow squash i grew in my garden this past year, i added black walnuts to the mix and baked it. man oh man it came out closer to cake than bread and was so good!. those black walnuts make it taste very good.

Got to love those black walnuts..they are far superior to the english variety. If you dont mibd going modern on them, a pair of dikes works like a charm for getting the meats out relatively fast.

Don't forget that you're comparing two different species.
Juglans nigra is the black walnut.
J. regia is the English walnut of commerce.

The medieval Brits would not have been able to make the comparison as we can so easily do today.

Ha ha! I was thinking that you had made tools using black walnut wood! My Dad was from upstate Michigan and used to rave about black walnuts. But I have yet to taste one, nor a chestnut. I feel deprived!

ive used the wood for carpentry type projects. its a beautiful wood.but no, just stone and bone for these tools.lol

Ateyo, Black walnuts taste a lot different than English walnuts...Much stronger taste. You either love them or hate them. They make very good nuts to add to cookies and such like. Tons of them grow here.I can get bushels of them.  Sometimes at the end of my yard. Quills

To my taste, black walnuts are the finest tasting of the nuts, and one of the finest tasting foods in the world, but they are very difficult to get out of the shells. Modern markets have developed machines that crush/crack them and shake the pieces apart, then separate the pieces of meat from the shells. Doing it the old way with a hammer and a rock or anvil was too slow to eat them often.
