I am just wanting to bring everyones awareness up when you are working with sharp items.
I was not wearing gloves when i was using my new machete which resulted in getting stitches to my right thumb and now i dont think ill be able to work with my rocks for at least a few weeks.
So please everyone wear gloves when needed and safe knapping to you all.

No hitting the like button for this one, thankfully you got to the ER quickly. Keep it clean and dry and you’ll be back in no time.

Last summer I was camping with my girls and brothers and their families. I was working on some Atlatls and clowning the folks on Naked and Afraid on how they end up cutting themselves with a knife the first day of the show. I said who does that? What idiots! I had a bottle of glue that the top had dried up , I was using kinda a rounded tip skinning knife to dig the glue out, and if I didn’t stick that thing into the bone on my left pointer finger!!! Luckily I had some electrical tape to wrap it up. A year later it still tingles around the spot. I sure ate my words!!😀

"conservative aggression" was the concept in dealing with an ultimately breakable material and shape. had to hit it relatively hard to get rid of the thickness down to the deepest ripple, and to get rid of the extra width. but edge prep and support have to be exactly enough, but no more, and exactly right. and the percussion needs to be just what is needed, and no more. you don't want flakes to blow up, but you want them to go quickly without shocking the piece, using mainly the weight of the piece as the inertia to run against.

no gloves, no cuts, primarily due to keeping the flakes together and controlling them. plus my hands know what not to do now without me telling them. they learned the hard way but they learned.
