It's time to start talking about picking a weekend for next year's Valley of Fire atlatl event, so we can get the date requests into the park.

Let's hear your votes.

The best weekend for us is the weekend of March 24th and 25th, since our kids will be out of school.  I believe this also corresponds to the weekend we held it this year.

Also, if you haven't joined the Facebook group, "Valley of Fire Atlatl Event", you are welcome to discuss this there as well.

Don't be shy!  We need to get the dates in by the beginning of December!

My vote is for the week after, weekend of March 30th. Following the normal Thursday-Tuesday schedule, that would be March 29-April 3rd, as I plan on being out of town the weekend prior. I could consider cancelling my trip if the date selected ends up being the weekend of March 24th, but I'd prefer not to.

Ken, I requested to be added to the Facebook group. Also, maybe a poll on here could help people express which weekend they want?

Good idea on the poll, Angelo.  I added you on FB, too.

Regarding the last weekend in March, it is problematic for some, in that Easter falls on that weekend this year...  In addition, Mario is attending a wedding that weekend.

I sure hope we can all attend!

I totally forgot about Easter. March 17-18 works for me instead!

We've had a request from a long time attendee that we pick a date ASAP (within the next two weeks) if possible, so they can plan their vacation time.

Going by here and the FB page, it is looking like the weekend of March 17th is a strong contender.  My family can make that weekend work, if necessary.

Please get your comments in...

We need to nail this down immediately!

I think you might just have to call it at March 17th if there are no other votes by the end of the week.

Ok, I talked it over with Mario, and he and I agreed we should go forward and pick the weekend of March 17th.  So far everybody who has chimed in is fine with that date.  It is also the third weekend of the month, which we picked as a possible date when we talked about it in person at the awards ceremony (when everybody was gathered) last year.

I'll contact the park this week and nail down the dates.

Any thoughts on if we are going to need three campgrounds again?  I tend to think we will.  Last year there was very little discussion online, but plenty of people showed up...

I think three campgrounds is a good idea. We definitely had a ton of people last year that weren't active online. Better be safe than sorry.

Yep, I agree, Angelo.

Just had the dates we requested confirmed by the park.  They are holding three campgrounds for us!

I've been talking to the new park interpreter. Her name is Rosa, and she is very nice, and super enthusiastic about the event!
She says the park is low on darts (I recall them being in sad shape last year, and they do demos throughout the year, not just at ours). I told her I'd put the call out for more darts for the park. If you have darts to donate, or time to make them, great!

(darts without foreshafts will work better with the mammoth target we are using for the demo).

If you want to contribute but don't have time to make darts, I have them for sale, and I'll bring them to the event.

We are still finding out the condition of the ISAC backings and stands that we left in storage at the park. Mario is going to try and make some more backings, and purchase some target faces, unless somebody else chimes in.

Persistence Hunters' Challenge has been shelved this year, due to lack of interest (or ratio of work to participants, whichever sounds nicer).  If anybody wants to do a demo for the public of that, we are talking about putting up a short course where we do the Moche Toss, in the wash, with animal targets at each end, and having runners run up and down the wash, throwing on each end of the lap.
