i am a new bowyer, and i live on 360 acres of premium hichory, all varieties of oak, persimon, dogwood, elm, huckleberry, etc....

here is my dilema....there is this one kind of tree, that every time i walk by it, i contemplate what a wonderfull stave it looks like....and seemingly, it is a pretty dense wood...

i have tried every dichotomous key i can scrounge up, and i still cannot identify this tree, so i am hoping someone here will be able too....sorry, i have no pics, since it is night here, so i will describe ith the best i can for now...

it always grows in clumps(several trunks out of one central stump), it has very smooth bark, and it is light to dark grey, with alot of white blotches....

the leaves are eliptical, 5 to 6 inches long, 2 to 2.5 inches long, and the leaves and stems grow alternately....any ideas?

any help will be appreciated greatly,

The description of the trunks reminds me of serviceberry but doesn't really match the leaves. Pat

Try this. I think it is for ohio's trees, but who knows. Its at least worth a shot.

Here is the link that Dad One gave to me.

I hope that it works for you as well as it did for me.

I was able to ID my wood by using it's leaves.

Sorry if you have already tried this site.
