Re: Are certain animals unsafe to eat?

I was just talking to a friends son...who is a farmer down the road yesterday. He said several bobcats have been sighted less than a half mile down the road. There are a LOT more rabbits this winter....than I have seen evidence of in a LONG time. Maybe thats what the cats are after. Quills

Re: Are certain animals unsafe to eat?

The wood chuck I ate or rather tasted...both times was in chunks. It might be like beaver...better ground as far as my taste buds go. It might make a difference the age of the animal as well. Once it was from a guy who cooked pieces over a wood fire at a rendezvous. You could have dropped a piece and...

Re: Just for fun design me a wood stove/oven.

I have a friend who has a Chimera....no way could something like that be used inside. With the laws governing wood stoves these days..I sort of doubt one could even use a cob fireplace inside any where but it the very very rural boonies of Canada or the US. Of course I put in a wood stove myself in ...

Re: Liming Deer Hides in freezing temps

A quicker way to warm those fingers is a bucket of warm water....Guess how I know that??? Just sos you know..a long time ago...I used to use lime to loosen the hair...Like 34 years ago.....I had some ( 4 or so) deer hides in a barrel outside...and it had been above freezing....then the temp took a n...

Re: Are certain animals unsafe to eat?

People in olden times...ate a LOT of things that would either make most modern folks very sick or even kill them. Indians often ate drowned buffalo....and from accounts Ive read it was already going bad. They also ate ... offal from Deer Lewis & Clark killed...eating it right from the gut pile...squ...

Re: Buckskin Winter Gloves Help.

Sorry I can't help ya with any pictures. I believe really olden peoples might have used a mitten like glove....probably without a thumb even. People is very cold climates made their parkas with longer sleeves so they could pull their hands up inside the arms. Most of those olden people were much mor...

Re: Those hard-to-soften super thick hides

Tacking nails??? you mean nails to tack that pig hide on a board??  If that's what you mean...If it was me Id get some sinkers.....about 1-1/2 - 2 inches long...then you can use them for other things as well. That kind of nail is slimmer than a penny nail.. (not as fat) and has a head on it. Plenty ...

Re: Those hard-to-soften super thick hides

Wish I could help you Jan....but I know exactly nothing about thinning pig or wild hog hides. Ive butchered myself ..alone maybe 8-10 domestic pigs....and ended up burying the hides because I had the meat to take care of. That was actually before I started braintanning....and I have no idea how I wo...

Re: an interesting thought about wood species (osage!)

Ive heard tales of Hedge apples being good insect repellents especially for spiders. Ive also heard that's a lot of bull. Interesting about the slurry Bill Skinner.... I always thought it was just scattering the whole hedge apple around was how it was done. But....I only heard story's from folks who...
