Had to repair my Dragon fly atlatl / dog chewed the raw hide pinch rest / replaced the rest with birch bark then a friend who can’t throw was using it and broke off the rest / I just replaced it again with some plastic from an ice tea jug / added a stinger of 1/8” brass rod to aid in picking up darts laying flat on ground / this is a real hunting weapon here in Alaska / you can use with artic mittens on / the guide wings let you load quickly plus no need for using fingers to pinch and hold dart / the keeper loop lets you run, crawl, stalk without dart falling off chucker

The atlatl was a piece of green willow that was split And bone hook fitted into split / hammer grip is used on leather wrapped handle / my darts are 6 ft popular dowel from Lowe’s / points are 2.5” x 3/8” round stock with sockets made from 1/4” x 3/8” copper sweat coupling / an interesting fact the 1/4” side inside dia is actually 3/8” and the 3/8” side is actually 1/2” inside dia / the points and couplings are glued with medium supper glue / you can slam these points into trees, stumps, and even rocks without breaking  /I call them supper stumpers / if you look closely you can see  some black cord wrapped around dart shaft / this butts up against the pinch rest and prevents dart from moving forward and hook coming out of dimple in dart end

I have not used an atlatl, but I have two questions.

1. Is the plan to pop the retainer loop loose just before throwing? If so, is that done with the thumb?

2. Does the black string at the pinch release hinder the release?

If you squeeze the dart the keeper falls away from the peg / the cord on the dart shaft doesn’t affect the throw at all / as they say in the gun world “ your always locked and loaded” cheers
