They both have their own styles, lets leave it at that, both very good producers.
We discussed SP TITLE under a different headind a while ago.

About the Keyboard skills-I think the guy at Cyclone Studios is unbeleivable-Potts I'd say number 2.
But dont forget ex Pacific Gold Studios musician from Central Province, former sanguma,Buruka Tau-a keyboard specialist who attracted Yothu Yindi's attention and got singed up with the Band along with another ex-sanguma and fellow Pacific Gold Studio musician Ben Hakalitz-they toured the world, shared stages with Bon Jovi,Joe Satriani,Jimmy Cliff, etc etc -Buruka had medical problems and had to leave the group a few yrs ago-Good luck to him.-

With the SP title I have to say-I DONT BLAME PATTI POTTS DOI,its not his fault, its those media or PNG TOP 100 board officials who came up with the award and the title.

I GIVE CREDIT TO PATTI POTTS DOII and I SALUTE HIM FOR ONE THING,ie-OPERATING HIS "QUAKES PRODUCTIONS STUDIO INDEPENDANTLY and not having to affiliate with CHM like some studios we know.his albums are pressed in sydney.EM MAN TURU.Sampla studio ol parasait lo CHM stap coz CHM's got them by their balls,a sad fact-Their music talent cant help make money to free themselves from CHM.So POTTS WINIM YUPLA OLGETA LO DISPLA.

Now on to the SP TITLE.

I think the problem with patti doi and sharzy is that their music is dominated by the programmed keyboard.they use the keyboard for saxaphone, trombone and trumpet sounds etc etc instead of using the actual wind instruments...NO GUITARS...none at all.
they both use loop sequencing,midi-etc etc..well the whole world uses that these days-i shouldnt be winging(i think)..but what Iam trying to point out here is that they are no different to each other musically.

Their voices cannot pitch any higher..they sing in a certain tone unlike other PNG artists who could raise their voices as high as heaven,,eg..Mandawali,the late John Wong,Vanesaa Quaii, etc .

yes Sharzy and Potts can draw crowds, but the crowd number does not reflect the album sales.,thats one thing we have to take note of..so how do we define popularity????how do we pick a South Pacific King??...well how did POTTs win(or get)the King of SP title??..interesting one isn't it..
.if Potts had gotten his SP title based on album sales, then something is wrong..because Daniel Rae Costello beats everyone in that department-His "samba" album sold more than "300,000" copies-check out his website on that, and his latest albums averages around 200,000-he has toured around the South Pacific-and South Pacific means Melanesia,Polynesia,Micronesia....

Potts and Sharzy have only toured the Melanesian countries in the South Pacific not Polynesia, not Micronesia-now that tells us something..

I would say the King of the SP title should be between Daniel Rae Costello and O-shen,yes like Costello O-Shen has toured around the South Pacific-Malenesia,Polynesia,Micronesia and like costello his albums are sold from PNG all the way to Hawaii..I cant give you any figures on his album sales-I dont have those facts with me..(sorry)

But lets not forget another grass root musician-George Telek,he records his international albums in England and his albums are marketed by Virgin (maybe sony)records world wide,he is the first and so far the one and only South Pacific musician who has won an ARIA award in Australia in 1996..again I cant give you any figures on his album sales-I dont have those facts with me..(sorry)-

Telek, unlike Costello and O-shen,continually tours the world, from New York,to Germany,France,Brazil etc(google it)..Telek has had one of his songs used as a sound track in the Australian.ch9 movie series-"The Alice" his song(originally Barike's) "Waitpela Garas" is the one am talking about.
.O-shen too has had one of his songs"throw away the gun" used in a Holywood movie-50 first dates...Take note,Telek sells more of his( European recorded )albums outside of the South Pacific while O-shen and Costello sell more albums within the South Pacific..So again how do we come up with a criteria for the SP title??Think about it.

The way I see it,there's only one King of the South Pacific-and she is a woman-and she is no longer alive-She will always be THE QUEEN OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC no matter what.-Her name was AFUNAKWA.

In 1971 she sang a traditional folk song, recorded by a Frence ethnomusicologist , the song is called ROROGWELA.In 1992 Rorogwela was sampled by Deep Forest and used in a song called "Sweet Lullaby" Marketed by SONY the song became an international pop hit selling over three(3) million copies world wide...The song shook the American Charts and the European Charts like a Pacific Tsunami..IT SHOOK THE WORLD from 1992 right up till 1996!!!
The song was used in many international documentries and movies from Hollywood,Asia,Arab,SPAIN,Africa,India etc etc..It was huge.It remained on the international charts for months and months..

Yes that young woman singing was from North Malaita in the Solomon Islands.Afunakwa was her name. She passed away years ago.

If you dont know the song or this lady ,go to YOUTUBE,type in "Deep Forest sweet lullaby" and listen ..
or click here--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvnVdMpgQOk

Rest in Peace Afunakwa.

YOU ARE MY QUEEN OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC-FOREVER!!

In my rating above I said Potts is number 2-Number 2 to Buruka Tau that is.
He;s multi-Talented who plays many instruments.
He's is the former lead guitarist of the ShutDown band of Rabaul, took over after Kabu Rita left.
Emmanuel cant match Potts in Album sales and popularity and Talent.
Thats why Potts's studio successfully operates indepandantly.

7mile welcome aboard ..Iam glad to have you in our little debate.lol.-you are the best moderator.

yes I try my best to come up with facts my friend and whatever proof I have I post it here.
Thank God you like the song.
7mile you know, my heart aches for Afunakwa coz she was never rewarded for the use of her voice.
Her relatives from Korae village in Malaita have never received any cent to this day.
The culprit and grand thief here is the United Nations, they own the album,it was their project, they were behind it.But they have their back turned on this lady and her people. So sad.
United Nation is should be ashamed, stealing from a poor 3rd world citizen.ironic indeed.

FIJ for this time around I will agree with you that Manu can't match Potts as a recording artist but as a music producer Manu has the upperhand...

Cheers.

My goodness, that is stealling big time. UN should be ashamed of themselives. Did I understand your message right, in you saying that UN members from PNG were PNG PM and his cronies? It is so sad that this sort of thieving hasn't stopped.

I know of a case in producing a CD from Solo too, in this case the people won and put a stop to further production of the CD under the original name, because the participants never got any royalities from the CD when it came out.The title of the CD was then Siva Pacifika.

Checked it out too and yeah its a great song.If its true that she was not compensated/acknowledged for that, it is a true crime against yet another third world country.

In PNG we have so many of these kinds of traddional songs, unfortunately not many of our current musicians seem to be skillfully developing these songs. Not even some of these musicians that we are arguing for here on scape.
