Hi Ladies:

Had my 1st suppression check this morning after almost two months of BCP's and have one follicle measuring 10 mm and one at 11. My progesterone level was normal although I'm not aware of the value. I started on Progesterone only BCP's with SRM around the 4th of July and then changed to Estrodiol/desogestrel BCP about 2 weeks ago with ORM. Last AF was June 29th!! Dr. Hesla wants to delay my stim another week to try and shrink both follicles. I was afraid of this based on my high Day 3 E2 levels back in January (E2 = 78). Maybe they're unrelated and you all can set me straight. My concern now is that I'm going to produce few eggs or even worse experience a cancelled cycle. Am I worrying for nothing??

And, did they see any other smaller follies?

It's so hard to tell, but knowing some history can help inform puzzling over it ...

Hugs,

Thanks for all the info! WOW, what a journey. When I start feeling discouraged I'm going to pull up your journal!!

When Dr. Hesla did an U/S two weeks ago he found app. 10 follies (6 right, 4 left) so I know I have more. The tech at my local clinic (remote) was just measuring the biggest one's (I'm sure that's their protocol) so I don't know exactly how many more were there but it can be far off from the number two weeks ago.

Here's my "flare" protocol: Stop B/C's; Baseline U/S before starting meds

Microdose Lupron = 20 IU
Menopur = 75 IU
Follistim = 300 IU

I'm also instructed to take Dexamethasone as well as Omnitrope (both for egg health).

If the rest are down around 4-5mm or so, then having two at 10-11 will mean two bolting really fast and the others not able to catch up. So, it's worth having them even if possible.

What I really don't know is whether there's a downside to trying to "shrink" follies that are there vs. just trying for another cycle when they are more in line. But after waiting 2 months on BCPs I personally would be more impatient than that!

Good luck!

Kiwichick:

Thanks so much for your input! I've been on BCP's (2 differnt kinds with 2 differnt RE's) the last 2 months because I changed RE's. I started out with Seattle afer my M/C but decided before my 1st cycle to go with Oregon due to better #'s on DOR. The pharmacist told me when I picked up the pills I'm currently taking (estrodiol/estinyl) that I'll be thanking her when I get PG on my own. I too thought that it was odd to think you could "shrink" follicles after they start growing. Would it be safe to assume that my body is overcoming the BCP's and trying to ovulate? I haven't had AF in over 2 months. Just curious what you think.

Most women are fine on BCPs, but I do know that one or two women here (might have been KarenGH tho my memory is foggy) would just ovulate right through whatever suppression they were on, so I really do think there are individual differences there. I seemed to suppress (and oversuppress!) easily, so I talked my RE into letting me use half the normal dose of Estrace precycle suppression. You know, after taking them for 2 months I'd be inclined to run with it and see if he can get them all quietened down for you. But I'd also ask that question, see if your RE has a theory at least, or any evidence why it's OK to shrink. I'm always interested in how REs explain their implicit theories anyway, but that's [geeky] me!
