It's implied at various points that Laoghaire had a bad experience with one of her earlier husbands, maybe involving abuse of some sort or at least some sort of unpleasant/painful sexual experiences. I don't think she's afraid of Jamie personally; it's just that she's afraid of everything related to sex.

I discovered something in my current re-read. In this chapter, Claire is telling Marsali how to use the sponges soaked in tansy oil. Marsali inquires whether to remove the sponge afterward or leave it in. Just at this point, the encounter with the Porpoise occurs, leaving Claire to tell Marsali "I'll tell you later."  Next time she sees Marsali, of course, is on the beach at Cap Haitien... and she observes that Marsali's dress is stretched tight across her bosom (attributing this to seawater shrinkage) and also notices Marsali's glowing skin. Makes you wonder... :)

Claire does ask Marsali when she noticed her glow if she had been using the tansy oil and Marsali's response was "Huh?" while staring at Fergus. I definitely got the impression that Claire drew the conclusion that Marsali chose not to use the tansy oil, not that she didn't know how to use it! Claire is so thorough that I can't imagine she wouldn't have finished the birth control lesson before the wedding night!

I was thinking maybe it happened before the wedding night - with Claire off on the Porpoise and Jamie off trying to rescue her. But you are probably right, Claire is nothing if not thorough!

I was presuming that Fergus kept his word not to bed Marsali before having a proper wedding! Jamie and Claire seemed convinced that he would abide by his promise due to his deep respect for Jamie, but they wouldn’t be the first parents to misjudge a child’s sense of virtue!
