Looking for a new niche in the international market, LAIX ARMS finally settled upon creating a yacht fit for the Lamonian President. Such a design could also be sold for export to foreign heads of state and government. While attempting to establish the international interest level for such a product, orders for the finished product of any such project had been received from both the Marshite Church, as well as from Wagdog.
The Wagdian proposal was especially interesting, as they had also requested that the yacht be able to serve as a small hospital ship, in addition to it's other duties. At the same time, the yacht would have to be able to be furnished for any head of state. This would make the yacht design a true workhorse, as well as an important symbol of the state that it should happen to serve.
The name Regnum was chosen for the class via a competition involving any interested persons in the Free Republic of Lamoni. Regnum is a Latin word, with a meaning of: rule, authority, kingdom, realm. The Lamonian unit of the Regnum class Yacht will be named the FRLS Hawk, this name chosen in the same competition as the class name.
Due to the nature of this type of ship, it is highly advisable for this class of ship to have a naval escort while at sea.
The hull is composed of a sandwich design consisting of a PVC core with a carbon fiber and vinyl laminate. This type of material reduces the ship's radar signature, good heat insulation reduces the IR signature, and increases survivability against fires. The hull is non-magnetic, and weighs roughly 50% less than the equivalent strength steel.
The ship utilizes the Ulstein X-bow. The Ulstein X-bow is an inverted ship's bow designed by the Ulstein Group to improve handling in rough sea, and to lower fuel consumption by causing less hydrodynamic drag. It is shaped somewhat like a submarine's bow. Operators claim that the design achieves higher speed and a calmer motion in rough seas.
Engines and Propulsion
Two Flat-12 multi-fuel diesel engines were selected for the yacht, providing a rugged, yet simple engine design. Rated at 1,312 kW each, the engines are expected to be able to move the ship at 17 knots. In Lamonian Service, the engines are expected to run on number two diesel.
Propulsion is generated by two controllable pitch propellers, placed at the rear of the ship. Both the propeller hub and the blades are made of nickel-aluminum-bronze alloy, with the propeller having a four-bladed design. The propeller blades are moved via a tie rod cross head, with stainless steel pins. On each pin, a moveable slipper block is mounted in a milled slot in the blade foot. This controls the pitch of the propeller.
The propellers are attached to the HY-100 steel shaft, which is itself attached to a hydraulic power pack, and reversing mechanism.
Controllable pitch propellers were chosen, so that the ship has the following advantages:
1.) Maximum horsepower can be taken from the engine – without overloading – by changing the pitch.
2.) The number of revolutions can be kept constant – and the speed of the vessel can be regulated by means of the propeller pitch.
3.) At lower than the maximum speed, the engine’s fuel consumption can be reduced considerably by increasing the pitch and lowering the number of revolutions while maintaining the required speed. In this way the loading of the engine, and the total efficiency of the unit is increased.
4.) Using fully reversible propellers, only a reduction gearbox is needed.
5.) Prompt and inexpensive replacement of individual blades in case of damage to the propeller.
6.) Engine idle speed on a fixed pitch propeller vessel often propells the vessel too fast for docking maneuvers, whereas a CP propeller offers supperior low speed vessel control.
Much thought has been given to making sure that the conversion from yacht to hospital ship (and back) can proceed as smoothly as possible.
1.) The design of the ship's restroom facilities comes complete with room for extra showers and toilets, all that is required is to place modular dividers between plumbing stations. In addition, non-slip materials have been incorporated into the design of the flooring in the facilities.
2.) Modular dividers can be installed in the Presidential accommodations, allowing for a twenty-bed hospital facility, with a single operating room. These accommodations have been placed in the stern of the ship.
3.) The crew and officers (with the exception of the captain) reside in bunk beds in their cabins, and can hot bunk with any additional personnel that are on the ship at any time, if the need arises.
4.) Multiple kitchens allow for the crew, officers, and patients or heads of state to eat in shifts.
5.) Interior decor choices and furnishings are the responsibility of the recipient nation, as LAIX ARMS wishes to work with the recipient nation in this regard.
6.) While the recipient nation is responsible for the small arms and MANPADs used for defense of the yacht, a small armory for these weapons is provided.
7.) The mess halls allow for the showing of movies, as well as allowing various games to be played. This helps to keep up crew morale, and provides the head of state entertainment, or the ability to view classified intelligence while on board.
8.) Nozzles around the deck and upper structures can be used to spray water on fires. In the event of NBC attack, these nozzles can also be used to decontaminate the ship, or other nearby ships.
Two Thales Scout MK2 surface surveillance and navigation radars have been installed on the ship, providing a vastly increased collision reduction capability. The SCOUT MK2 is an X-band, short-to-medium range, Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave radar, maintaining a Low Probability of Interception, due to it's low operating power.
Another benefit of this radar is that the connection to below deck equipment
is made by a single, thin cable. This vastly reduces the amount of hull penetration. A light weight of 115 kg allows the radar to be placed almost anywhere on the ship.
The radar consists of two parts: the above deck antenna system with integrated transceiver and a below deck processor unit. The processor unit contains Doppler processing and detection and tracking and can deliver video and track data directly to a C&C system. If required, the high resolution radar video can be fed to a navigation radar console for ‘covert navigation’. The radar has a range of 44.44 km, with radar "cells" as small as three meters.
A communications room on board the Yacht can fit whatever communications equipment is seen fit to be used by the recipient nation.
