~ 6: Starting Up A Roleplay ~
If you’re new to roleplaying, then you might want to take part in a few before going in to creating your own. Roleplays are quite different from individually written stories. Because of the diverse nature of a roleplay, even the beginner of one can’t completely control it. How the story goes is largely decided upon all the members taking part. Subplots may be created, and the roleplay may generally deviate from what you had originally planned. A way to partially avoid this is to have a strongly rooted plot. Otherwise, the best way to get used to a roleplay and study the way it works is to join in, and have fun! Now, if you really think you’ve got the basics down, these are a few tips to help you as you strive to create your successful roleplay:

Choose your preference.
•We feel that having a casual and advanced section in the roleplays better suits the needs of the members. Whether you’d like to play detailed, developing characters or just want to have fun with one-liners is what decides which section you’d fit in better.
Read the rules.
•Checking up and making sure your roleplay corresponds with the rules is essential when beginning your roleplay. Things like violence, sex, and gore are especially important, seeing as this is a family-friendly forum.
Pick a genre.
•Whether it be realistic or fantasy, animal or dinosaur-related, choosing the genre, or general category, of your roleplay BEFORE starting it is pivotal. There are a couple of different genres, so you might want to research some before starting your roleplay.
Create a plot.
•A roleplay, or any story for that matter, without a plot is nothing. Dinosaurs eating each other is not a viable plot. Neither is people moving around/eating/sleeping. Your plot needs to be interesting to draw different members to it, so you might want to think a bit about this before starting.
Choose a setting.
•The setting is just as important, or even more important, than the plot. It could be anywhere, any time, and any mood. If you feel you want to start a post-apocalyptic roleplay, then a fitting setting for your characters would be a desolate lifeless area in the middle of nowhere in the future, or a lush sanctuary where people protect themselves from the outside world. The setting is a fundamental part of the story, and overall is part of what makes a successful roleplay.
Choose a narrative mode.
•This basically tells the members involved whether to play their characters in first-person or third-person. Both modes have their strengths and weaknesses, so it largely depends on the preference of the starter. A roleplay must NOT have both third-person and first-person characters, which may cause confusion in the roleplay.
Set up a profile.
•Whether it’s in the advanced or basic roleplay section, the beginner of the roleplay is required to create and set up his or her own profile. Profiles in the basic section are usually quite simple, while advanced ones require more detail. The profile should include several important descriptions of the character, such as name, gender, age, appearance, and an overall description/history of the character. Going into more detail, you could add more specific things like hair/eye color, likes/dislikes, friends/family, and enemies.
Have fun!
•In the end, the whole purpose of creating a roleplay or taking part in one is to have fun. Don’t strive to create a roleplay just because you want it become popular/successful. Work hard on it. Do it because it’s what you like to do and because you want to share it with others. Trust me, if you create a roleplay that you know you’ll personally enjoy, then other members will eventually love it.
