N64 and fog

Why is it that games like ocarina of time and banjo kazooie have very little noticible fog but Turok you can't see 5 feet infront of you?

Both the n64 and the ps4 have 64 bit processors. Now I'm not saying the 64 could run crysis at 60 fps but I'm not saying it couldn't.

I'm guessing that some games were better coded/optimized and used fog less as a crutch while other games were the opposite. Or it was a stylistic choice or that of realism like buddy mentioned! :P

I have always assumed it was a crutch as well. I imagine even when used as a style or realism choice, it was a convenient crutch none the less. I had been playing 7 Days to Die, which is horribly plagued by fog on the PS4. Graphically it is about on par with late PS2/early PSX, so there is no excuse for it. It is just lazy programming of a port.

But, many games on the 64 that had bad fog were still very fun and it never bothered me too bad.

It was a lot more noticeable in earlier N64 games and Turok 1 is always the one people referenced.

It was a case of what would people prefer, pop up or fog?
And fog is the better option.

I didn't mind it at all in Turok, it suited the atmosphere and doesn't bother me whatsoever.
I need to play through that game at least once a decade, it's such a timeless classic.
The music, the atmosphere...the weapons.

Turok should get a pass. Sure, fog is better than visible pop ups, but it wouldn't have been the same game without the atmospheric fog.
A jungle setting with no fog or draw distance will look like the jungle level in Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. Clear, cold, and lacking a sense of urgency. It may have worked for parts in Infernal Machine, but no one wants to play an entire Turok game like that. It would be like playing Trespasser: Jurassic Park.
On second thought, that would've been a great N64 game!

One of the reasons I love Wave Race 64 so much is because of the fog that slowly lifts each time you go around the Drake Lake track. That really blew my mind the first time I raced on that level. Heck, I still find it impressive today. :lol:

Yes!

That level and that weather effect was one of the first brilliant technological show offs for the 64.

I too still love that effect to this day!

The fog really never bothered me as much as pop-up. I do not like pop-up in a racing game. Give me fog instead!

Most of Nintendo's first-party games for the N64 use fog only when it's appropriate. It was the third-party games like Turok and Extreme-G that used it to hide lazy programming. :-/
