If we created a Group that is Post(Moderated) or Approve(Moderated) - not sure of the difference - would posters in that group know their post is moderated?

Would this prevent known trolls from posting under their NW54 login until after their post is approved?

Thanks!

Users who are aware of moderated forums will know their posts are being moderated only because they will not show up on the forum until approved. There is no notice alerting them unless you post it on the forum.

It will keep trolls from having their posts read by all, except those you give permissions to be able to moderate.

I am unsure what Approve (Moderated) does, to be honest.

Thanks, cousin!

I sure would like some way to make them think their posts are posted but just no one is replying. Perhaps another route other than NW54? -sighs-

are the usual main concern for forum owners, other than technical issues. The best way to deal with trolls is to either ignore them or to not allow them to post at all.

Let them get mad about their posts not showing up, there is nothing they can do about it. If you make your forum private, it will stop them completely.

I know, people who run forums think their forum has to be open to the public to survive, but that's simply not true. Opening your forum to the public does nothing but allow trolls to join you. The people that want and deserve to join you will login to your forum if you make it that way. I run several forums on different websites. The popular ones are all closed, private forums, yet they have many members who participate regularly. These same forums were once public and they have not lost members due to the security measures.

This forum gets SPAMMED almost daily with people selling stuff, links to websites for porn and other such nonsense.

Do you ever see those posts? Do you see the SPAMMERS complaining that their posts are ignored? No, and you never will, since this forum is moderated. It's not a perfect solution (makes more work for moderators), but it works.

Playing games with trolls, answering them, getting into online arguments with them, all feeds into their plans. These people have nothing better to do than sit around and post on various bulletin boards and forums, trying to get a rise out of someone. It is best to ignore or do away with them. There is one Network54 forum I visit daily, which allows one of these trolls access, and he or she disrupts discussions on a regular basis. He or she used to visit and disrupt other Network54 forums until they went private. The troll is now unable to post on those, but it is still able to read posts and now e-mails people on the side trying to stir up trouble.

My answer to that would be to lock down the forum and make it so only members can read posts, but that's just me.

Thanks.

I've created a Post(Moderated) group and place each of the spammers in that group. Those forums I create myself I do require registration/login but this is a project were I am assisting a friend. In fact where I have unlimited control both to the forum config and the actual php I use Askimet (et al) to prevent as much spamming as possible.

I appreciate y'alls labors and hope you have a joyous Pesach (if you celebrate such).

Be well!

A better method is to exclude trolls and spammers completely. Allowing them to post, even in moderated form, just makes more work for you and your moderators. If that's OK by you, however, go for it.

Thanks, Easter is my upcoming holiday. Enjoy yours as well. I only heard the term Pesach for the first time about a week ago while shopping for a Passover card for a family friend.
