Hello- Earlier I posted on a forum. After I posted, I read it and saw that my IP address was listed on the posting. I tried to figureo out how to delete it, but couldn't. So, I deleted my account- thinking that it would delete posting as well. It didn't and now my posting is up with my IP address listed. I have the same sign in name on other forums and I really don't want certain people from accessing my IP address. COuld you please help me to get that posting deleted?
PS- There is nothing offensive at all in the posting. I just really don't want my IP address on there. Please help me.-- Thank you- Teddy

What exactly bothers you about your IP address being shown? OK- I'm not really sure how the IP address works, but if the people that I don't want to know where I live- find my IP address-- They still wouldn't be able to figure out where I live...Is that correct? Really,I don't know - so I am asking you. If this is true, then I wouldn't worry so much.-- Thanks-- Teddy.

I'm sorry- to make it more clear... I am worried that certain people will look up my name, find my post, see my IP address, and then look it up and figure out where I live. That's my concern. Are you saying that that is not possible?

That depends on who you mean by "certain people"......

Here's the deal...

An IP address is nothing more than the location of the ISP's router which connects your computer (and several others) to the internet. It does not give anyone your home address or even the town you live in, unless the router is in the same town as you. Mine used to be and the forums here used to show the town of the IP address associated with the username of the person posting. This did cause me a bit of concern as I had a stalker following me and actually had to move to get her to stop (or at least slow her down for awhile, she eventually moved away herself). The last thing I needed was for her to find out the town I live in now, especiaslly since, although I live in NYC, I live in one of dozens of smaller towns in the city (it would take about 2 minutes for someone who knew my vehicle to locate me in this town).

That being said, I do not worry about anyone else getting my IP address info or the location of my town. If I were doing anything illegal, I would worry because law enforcement can track down individuals using their IP address and other factors if they need to. It is not quite as easy as they make it look on CSI and shows like it, but it can be done if they really, really want to do it.
