Strength Training

Michio had been wondering around Nukumi ever since he returned from hunting. He had added to his reputation, bringing in a full five deer, and impressive feet for even the hunters who called this land their home, let alone a foreign child. He had more than surprised most of the people who had heard about him, but he had claimed these people would NEVER forget his name, just some hunting wouldn't do. He had to challenge some genin, prove he wasn't just a normal child shinobi! Michio had been looking for a genin to fight for a whole hour, but he couldn't find any! Were they all in the Mark of the Hunter tournament right now? There was no way he could be the ONLY genin who wasn't taking place.

Eventually he would find himself near a boy who seemed to be around his age. He certainly wasn't from the land, so maybe he knew where some genin were. The boy was small and thin, although his tanned skin seemed to contrast this look greatly. Perhaps he was a sun bather? The boy also had a teal color to his hair, and was kept messy and short, like Michio's but clearly on accident rather than stylized that way. The boy's eyes were also bright, something him and Michio had in common, but other than that the boy just looked plain. I wasn't until he got close and saw the boy's weapons pouch that Michio realized, this was a genin! He practically cheered when he found out, running straight up to the boy. "I want to challenge you. Can we spar?" He asked directly, not even introducing himself before going straight to the point. He hoped the boy would say yes, he didn't know if there were any other people in his age group to fight.

Kotaru was, in all honesty, bored. He had taken to wandering around Fur Country and occasionally spectating the various spars and events that were going on every minute of every day. Most others seemed to enjoy the festivities, but the young Iwa genin had quickly gotten bored with everything that wasn't related to his own training. At least the food was good. He had just eaten a quick lunch and was sipping from a juice box as he meandered through town, wondering what he was going to do for the rest of the day until it was time to eat again. When he reached the outskirts, some random kid boldly approached him and requested a spar.

The genin gave him a quick look up and down and scoffed. He was taller than Kotaru and bulkier, but the Akari never let things like physical build intimidate him; he was quite used to others being bigger than him. He clothes were flashy, his skin and hair meticulously cared for. The shiny band around his forehead indicated he was from Konoha, and the boy rolled his eyes. Typical. Konoha natives practically thought they ran the world. Everything about the guy screamed arrogance.

"I'd rather not," Kotaru replied before taking another quick sip of juice, "but you probably won't leave me alone if I didn't, would you?" When the juice box was empty, the Akari sighed and crumpled it in his hands. At least now he had something to do. "Fine. Lead the way then."

Michio smiled, bouncing on his toes as heard the fellow genin's answers. "GREAT! Let's go!" He said as he ran down the street to an open field. Once they were a few meters from the village Michio turned around with a bright smile. He would draw his strange blade, a cross shaped sword made of seemingly gold and ivory. "Alright, who should go first, you or me?" He asked the boy, the question genuine. Michio was still new to sparring, more often than not the other person just jumped in or they said for him to attack, so Michio had assumed that that's how things went. "And don't worry, I'm using my chakra to blunt the blade a bit, it won't cut you." He stated as he demonstrated by dragging it across his hand. True to his word he had covered the blade in a round chakra barrier, not blood was drawn and no wounds were made. If anything the chakra did make a slight indentation so long as it was touching something.

"Thanks by the way. You have no idea how long I've been searching for someone to spar." He continued talking, before entering his style's preferred stance. His legs would spread wide and remain flexible, while his sword hand would hold the blade in a strange method that kept it ready to move in seemingly any direction. His other hand stayed at his side, ready to strike. However it was leaving his torso open, something that the boy could come to regret. "Ready when you are."

This boy was almost annoyingly eager. When he asked who would go first and drew his blade, Kotaru crossed his arms over his chest and said nothing. Kotaru had been in several spars since he'd arrived in Fur Country, but he only had limited experience fighting someone who used swords. In his few spars with sword wielders, he had learned to pay attention to a sword's length and reach. The Konoha shinobi entered a stance that didn't say much to Kotaru besides the fact that his torso was wide open and that he seemed confident with using his sword.

Kotaru dropped his hands to his side when the other boy indicated he was ready to start, surprised that he hadn't immediately charged at him and started swinging. The Iwa genin's stance was simple and relaxed - shoulder width apart, both hands held slightly away from his body in case he needed to quickly grab a weapon to defend himself. Interested to see the other genin's fighting style, Kotaru sneered, "Ladies first."

Michio would have been annoyed by the 'ladies first' comment, but he was too excited now! He finally could spar and prove his worth in combat, making his claims more than just words! Michio would waste no time in the fight, charging in with his blade ready to smack the child he was facing. First he would jab with his blade, and then flick his wrist to the right, changing the trajectory from a forward jab to a sideways slash. Then he'd get in close and attempt to deliver a punch with his left fist while his blade would thrust under it, hitting the boy if he ducked. Afterwards Michio would double back, before using yet another sword thrust. This time he would not flick his wrist, but change direction mid thrust into a sweep to knock his opponent over and hopefully onto his back.

This was the strength of the Toryu Close Quarters Stance. The ability to change directions at a moments notice, and attack from unexpected angles and curving their blade in and out from one attack to another. Sure it left one's torso open, but it more than made up for it offensively. Michio had also recently begun to discover that one could increase one's strength when using this stance through use of momentum. So that was what he would experiment with here. For each thrust he would pull his arm all the way back before lunging forwards. For each swing he would curve his arm as much as possible, and then slash in an arc. Now it was time to see if this would help at all.
[+] Jutsu used
*[Toryu • Close Quarters]
D- Ranked Taijutsu Stance
Prerequisite: 5 Taijutsu
The signature stance of the style, Close Quarters teaches users of this style how to rapidly change the angle, position and even grip of their weapon without moving their hand from it's signature position at the user's waist for maximum versatility. Users of this style often assume a one foot forward, one back, slightly swayed stance to free up movement as well at the expense of leaving their center open.

*[Toryu • Lunging Feint]
D-Ranked Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite: 5 Speed
A basic technique of the style wherein the user moves in for a basic lunge-thrust with their weapon, only to turn in mid thrust and attempt to sweep their leg under the opponent's own. This tends to be useful as a basic feint and can usually knock down those with less strength than the user who get caught by it.

Kotaru didn't prefer to fight in close quarters, but he quickly judged the boy's skills with taijutsu to be not quite as good as his own. Though the Konoha boy seemed pretty comfortable with the blade, Kotaru noticed he left himself wide open every time he switched between moves. Kotaru was able to keep up with him. When his opponent jabbed, he jumped backward to avoid it. When he transitioned between the jab and the slash, the Iwa genin simply jerked his body to the side to dodge. He blocked the punch with the side of his forearm, leaving him free to grab a kunai from his right leg pouch and block the blade coming at him from below.

When the metal clashed, Kotaru turned his right hand to point the blade towards his own body, then moved to thrust the back of his fist into Michio's unprotected chest. He would follow up by dropping his body and moving into a sweeping kick to knock the younger genin off balance. It wasn't hard to keep up with the Konoha genin; as far as Kotaru could tell, the boy was a little bit slower than him, and his moves were simple enough to predict and avoid.

Michio had no idea the person he had challenged was so strong. Not just physically but in speed and mental perception, Michio was just plain out classed. Every movement was predicted, every attack dodged, and every opening exploited. Michio couldn't believe he was so out matched here, he stood absolutely no chance. Were these the abilities of a genin who was ready for the Chuunin Exams? Was he fighting against the power of a specialist? Just what was it that gave the other genin such a huge gap in abilities? How was it that in a matter of seconds, Michio's jab had been dodged, his slash side stepped, his punch blocked, and the genin still had time to block his blade with a kunai, punch Michio in the chest and knock out his breath, then sweep him off his feet causing him to fall onto his back on the ground!? Was there even a chance of him winning?

Maybe not... but he couldn't just let the genin stomp him into the ground. He had to at the least protect himself. With each strike he would tighten his muscles, bracing himself for the impact of each attack the genin would unleash on him. When the punch landed, he froze up, and as he fell to the ground he braced himself for the pain of gravity. While his form was sloppy, it would at least help in decreasing the damage with his muscles. Michio would quickly push himself up off the ground, still charging at the boy with his blade. No longer did Michio's face show excitement, it showed determination. He was NOT going to leave here empty handed. Even if the only consultation was that he landed a SINGLE hit, it would be worth it! Michio would swing with all his might unleashing a flurry of swings, hoping that at least one would hit. Diagonal, Horizontal, Vertical, Zig Zag, it didn't matter! So long as one hit, it would be worth it!

The Iwa genin couldn't help but grin when he saw the other boy's demeanor change. No longer was he smiling and eager, excited to spar wiht someone; he had become serious and seemed to realize that he had erred by challenging a stranger so haphazardly. Kotaru had no trouble keeping up with the Konoha boy, even when he unleashed a furious sequence of attacks toward him. The Akari parried with his kunai, which was more than enough to keep Michio at bay.

After he blocked several of the attacks, Kotaru leaped back and then backflipped to put a bit of distance between the two of them, roughly two meters. He spun the ring of the kunai around his finger and smirked, "Not bad, not bad." And then, he closed the distance between them in a single leap and slashed at the wrist of Michio's sword hand. His gaze changed then, from amusement to cruel glee. "My turn." With his free hand, Kotaru formed a tight fist and slammed it into the Konoha shinobi's chest. He didn't pull his punch at all, and struck the boy with very near his full strength. He had no doubt the first punch would land, and he would follow it up by rushing to Michio's side and aiming a powerful twisting kick to his head. Kotaru had no intention of holding back; after all, the boy had challenged him first. He wouldn't give the boy much time to react or defend himself as he unleashed a flurry of powerful punches and kicks to Michio's body.

If Michio had thought he stood no chance, he had yet to see the full strength of his opponent. This genin, or chuunin, or whatever he was wasn't just stronger, he was on another level. His speed was faster than Michio could track, his strength was enough to send him flying, and his form had small holes that Michio couldn't use to his advantage. No matter what he did, how hard he tried, he would never be able to do anything to stop him. The best he could do was brace his body to with stand the onslaught.

However, not amount of bracing can keep his hands steady when the tendons have been cut. The kunai's blade would cut deeply into Michio's flesh, severing the tendons as his blade fell to the ground. Michio stared at the ground as he watched his sword clatter to the ground. His grandfather's blade, the one he specifically made for him and gifted to him. He wasn't just going to leave it on the ground. He had already been falling from the barrage of his opponent's attacks, clenching his muscles as tightly as possible to decrease the force of the impact. So he shielded his blade, grabbing it with his uninjured hand, while moving chakra to keep the blade in his hand no matter what. Standing back up, he'd point his blade back at the boy infront of him, changing the chakra around his blade to raiton, focusing the chakra to the tip of his blade as it began to shine a bright white, a low humming coming from the blade. He would launch himself at the malicious genin, using huge bursts of chakra to increase his speed. He refused to just let himself be kicked around, he was going to do something! He would swing at the boy's head as he desperately tried to make a shallow cut.

As he knocked Michio about, Kotaru growled, yelling, "Is that all you've got, Konoha?!" He hammered into the larger boy's body with his fists and feet, and deep down he was disappointed that their spar wasn't more of a challenge. He had fought much stronger foes, genin included. The confident boy that had challenged Kotaru was nowhere to be found, and the Iwa genin briefly thought he might have wasted his time by engaging the other boy.

When Michio picked up his sword and a low hum emitted from the blade, Kotaru's lips formed a small 'o' in mock surprise. It seemed the Konoha boy was getting extra serious. Kotaru couldn't tell exactly what had changed with the sword, if anything, though he figured he would find out quickly enough. Immediately after, however, Kotaru was truly caught off guard when the other shinobi came at him with a sudden speed increase. The Akari had to block the oncoming attacks in earnest, so he raised the small kunai to block the strike. But Kotaru, in a move that was very unlike him, was so caught up in the other boy's speed increase that he misjudged exactly where the sword would hit. The blade shallowly cut his cheek, and his head jerked in the direction of the strike's momentum. When the metal made contact with his cheek, he felt a sudden numbing sensation. It wasn't strong, but it made his entire face and part of his neck tingle uncomfortably.

Kotaru cut his eyes towards his opponent, his gaze much darker than before. 'Raiton.' That made the Akari a bit angry. Before Michio could follow up the attack, the Iwa genin formed a tight fist with his free hand and backhanded the other boy across the cheek. He expected the boy to go flying back several feet given he didn't pull back the strength of the punch whatsoever, but instead put all of his force into it. Before Michio could even skid to a stop, Kotaru would dash to his side and rip the sword from his grasp. "I'll take that," he sneered before taking a large leap backward and landing several feet away.

The weapon itself was pretty impressive. It was finely made, and even Kotaru could tell that whoever had forged it had taken an enormous amount of time to get it just right. The sword was nearly as long as Kotaru was tall, and the boy laughed dryly at the realization. "Nice. I have no use for it, but I'm sure the metal alone will fetch a decent price." He took a few steps backward and then jammed the sword's blade into the ground.

"It was way too easy to disarm you," he shouted since he was now quite a bit away from Michio. "Maybe if you spent less time primping in the mirror and making sure your looks and your clothes look good, and you spent more time training, it wouldn't be that way." With that, he turned around with his arms crossed and made his way back to Michio. "Tell you what. If you can manage to knock me over without using your fancy sword, I'll give it back to you instead of selling it and having it melted down." The cruel boy smirked, waiting on his opponent's answer.
