I really enjoyed the movie when it was originally released.  It's still an enjoyable film, but I have to "leave my brain at the door" when I watch it now.

Main flaw...The disappearance of the Robert Walden character.  How'd they manage that? It was as if never existed.  Didn't they think that Elliot Gould, a reporter, might check into it?  Call his parents, his other friends, co-workers, etc?  And, if they could do that with this guy, why didn't they do the same with Gould?  No, they tamper with his brakes, shoot at him (one bad shot, then they run away - hey - he was alone there - they could have just ran up to him and killed him!), got the cops to break in to his apartment and plant drugs...

But, as I said, I try to forget that and just enjoy the show.  Good music by Goldsmith, Sam Waterston is a hoot, and Telly Savalas steals every scene he's in.  And a happy ending (well, not for O.J and Sam, but at least for Brolin).

Another connection between THE ASTRONAUT and CAPRICORN ONE--James Sikking is in both.

Yes-and his scenes involve spaceship malfunctions and deception!

James Sikking, doing astronautics-spaceship malfunctions-Martian deception since 1972 and well into the 23rd century.

One time in the 90s I was in a university classroom stuck between a believer in the fake moon landing theory ("computers were the size of rooms back then, how could they fit them in a spacecraft?") and an astronomy major who was horrified/disgusted by such a person being sincere.

But the faked moon landing conspiracy theory is itself a component of  Bezmenov's US demoralization conspiracy theory since the claims of a faked space mission only seem to involve US efforts, not Soviet!
One of the more ridiculous videos I've seen on YouTube showed footage of the first U.S. space walk and claimed the jerky movements were due to it actually being created using stop-motion animation.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.
