But other illustrations by Steele in full face using Gillette as his model do not look anything like Doyle's description of Holmes. Gillette was too handsome. And Clive Brooke did indeed resemble Steele, and his last appearance as Holmes was a loose adaptation of the Gillette play.
How could Holmes be too handsome?  I don't remember Sir Arthur Conan Doyle saying was he was ugly.  The picture you posted a little later it looked like Roger Moore, who was known as a few more English heroes, including Sherlock Holmes.  I can't see you saying Roger Moore was not handsome.

Actually Doyle's original conception of Holmes was quite ugly. It was Sidney Paget who handsomed him up (and gave him the deerstalker).

A bit, that's true - Sidney used his brother Walter (who had been MEANT to get the illustrating gig; there was a mixup) as model.

(But still not Cary Grant - or William Gillette, even.)

And ~

The tall, thin, hawk-like - that's all according to Doyle.
