Some, but not all, postwar Shermans have this piece of kit. It is always seen on the left side and in the same location. However, I have no idea what it is for.

.......First Aid box bolted/welded on the side hulls of M4A2E8 & M4A3E8 hulls. Allowed accompanying infantry quick access to basic first aid supplies while using the tank hull as a shield.

Some, but not all, postwar Shermans have this piece of kit. It is always seen on the left side and in the same location. However, I have no idea what it is for.

It is an armoured first aid kit box. It open to the front of the tank. The hinge is on the side closest to the hull.
