Python is popular and used for a lot a applications. I use Gimp for example, an open source graphical program of which some algorithms are coded in Python too.

Be creative and enjoy writing programs. Back in the eighties a whole generation learned to write their first programs in Basic, me included, which was quite bad actually but it got people interested in programming and that's what important. Eventually you might move on to C or C++ and look back at Python as an easy to learn language you had fun with.
