I think Mamod have hit a niche in the market with the Boulton diesel. It is a very good quality product that will be very difficult  to match at this price and a good start into garden railways.
Couldn't agree more. I've been looking for a battery loco like this for ages.

Ok the issue with the cab screw will be addressed with the next batch.as Mike said it will be a spring loaded pin to secure it. Unfortunately the price will be increased.hopefully less than £330.to make comments us the forum or our email is good.the other tweak will be to move the charging point.

You want a charger that's for NiMh batteries and for charging up to 12 volts. They cost about £10 from places like Component Shop, a bit more from the likes of Maplins. The problem you may have is they may come with the wrong type of connector so you'll either have to make up a converter cable or talk to the supplier to fit the plug you want. For the Boulton with a charger socket in the middle of the "dashboard" it's a bit difficult to manipulate the normal straight 2.1mm plug so I fitted a 2.1mm right angle plug instead, which I find a bit easier to get in and out. Search for "right angle plug 2.1mm" on ebay. Alternatively search for "DC 2.1MM 90° RIGHT ANGLE FEMALE TO MALE ADAPTER"

Thanks Mike. The one I've got is adjustable from 3 to 12 volts also a polarity switch.

I've successfully fitted radio control to the Boulton.

Total cost to me: £27 for a Micro Viper ESC. I already had the receiver and the various odds and ends. For a transmitter I used the one for my Bertie which is only radio controlled on the regulator so the other joystick was free to use with the Boulton.

I removed the manual forward/reverse switch and replaced it with a simple on/off for the ESC as the Micro Viper came with a separate on/off switch on a length of wire.

I tucked the receiver's aerial into the Velcro strap I use to stop the battery moving around and, even though its completely surrounded by the loco's steel body there's no issues with the radio signal not getting through.

Total cost if I had to buy everything: Micro Viper ESC: £27, FlySky FS-i4 transmitter plus receiver from Amazon: £31.75, switches and connectors: say £4

Incidentally, I've concluded the whining sound is not from the electronics as I'd previously thought, but from the MFA motor's internal 30:1 reduction gearing. On my track, which is screwed to wood planks so act as a sounding board, it's probably going to be more noticeable than on other garden lines.

I get the whining sound on the track and on the rollers, I think the metal bodywork acts as an amplifier along with the gear box.
